5. When they shut down the federal government in 1995, it backfired on the GOP bigtime.

So, I don't think they will do it again this year, but you never know.
Boehnor's popularity is waning in the polls, with only an 18% approval rating of his actions in the House.
He may think he has nothing to lose by shutting down the government this year.

and anyone under the age of about 35 wouldn't really remember it that well, by which I mean it's not very likely that anyone currently under the age of 35 would have been much affected by the shutdown. Heck, even any number of us older folks -- and I'm 64 -- while we can remember it well, were not affected by it.

I thought it was a bad idea then, and I think it's a monumentally stupid idea today, but someone who isn't hit pretty hard by such a shutdown, and who also believes that we have too much government, will be enthusiastic about it, and afterwards, regardless of the outcome (short of total anarchy and overthrow of the government) will point to the shutdown and say "See, that wasn't so bad was it?"

I'm quite aware of the sequestration, but it feels as if it has not had any impact on me at all.

but he wants to be, and he's highly motivated. He's looking to move up fast and cash in faster. He's tied his wagon to the ubber reich in the hope of doing so. If that doesn't pan out, he could do a one-eighty and become a moderate overnight. He's that kinda guy.
