Clay Pell: "What Hillary Clinton has proposed this week is every bit as historic as the Pell Grant...."

Hillary Clinton Renews the Promise of the Pell Grant:

Throughout my life, countless people have shared with me the same story: I was young and hopeful, but uncertain — until I received a Pell Grant....

Back in 1960, my grandfather wasn’t well known, but he was elected to Congress with a simple vision: any student who had the “moxie and the drive” to get an education, he would say, should be able to get one.

But saying that all Americans — regardless of background — should be able to go to college and build a future was, unfortunately, far from conventional. In fact, just like today, there were strong interests and forces that fought efforts to invest in the future. But my grandfather was a fighter, and in 1972 — after twelve years of steadfast advocacy— the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant became a reality.

Since that day, more than 70 million Americans have been able to count on a Pell Grant to go to college, including more than 50 percent of African-American and more than 40 percent of Latino college students today.

From my grandfather’s example and in my own career, I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact that policy can have on people’s lives. What Hillary Clinton has proposed this week is every bit as historic as the Pell Grant and will open the doors of college more broadly than ever before....

The Pell Grant has shown me the difference that attending college can make in people’s lives. Such important policies are not inevitable but depend on determined and visionary leaders. Hillary Clinton has put forward the boldest plan to remove the barriers to college, and she uniquely has the determination to make it happen.

life's circumstances deny one the chance to finish, there is no debt with a Pell. Closest thing to free there is.

Hillary tosses out workable plans, not unreachable ideals (free education is a mighty and worthy goal however) the Pell grant had helped so many people-- myself included.
