And some purported progressives on DU are so blinded by their partisan devotion of BS, they refuse to acknowledge it. The video of the exchange is at this CNN link:

(6,496 posts)I'm a Hillary supporter, but this just seems like something silly to get upset over. I expect people to do these sorts of things in debates. We don't need to manufacture controversy were there is none. We are not desperate. Hillary is doing well. I don't understand why people are blowing up over Sanders saying "let me finish" and "excuse me, I'm talking". My husband and I say that sort of thing to each other all the time. People cut each other off when talking all the time, so what? It is a presidential debate. I expect this sort of stuff. It's not a politeness competition. BTW, I think Hillary and Bernie look very civil when you compare them to the republicans and their debates so far.
SunSeeker
(51,698 posts)I have no problem with "let me finish." My husband and I say that to one another. But the tone BS used and the implication of his "Excuse me, I'm talking" line conjures up the Mad Men world of "hush up little lady, don't you know a MAN is talking?" It suggests him talking takes precedence over her talking. The fact is, it was Hillary who was talking when he interrupted her on a pivotal point in the debate (which is why he interrupted her -- to stop her from saying damaging facts about his vote against the Detroit bailout).
Sorry, I didn't recognize you as a Hillary supporter (I can't see avatars on my phone version of DU). We do get Bernie supporters coming in here to troll us.

I honestly think that Bernie has a lot of respect for Hillary and he is treating her as a peer, but also an opponent at the same time. Other phrases would be better, but it is the type of phrase that gets used in the heat of the moment in debate to get a word in edgewise. I actually don't say "excuse me, I'm talking" all that much, but I know I'm guilty of saying it before. It is something normally said in an argument. I have witnessed people say it in a work setting too, but more often it is "let me finish". I've seen women say it and men say it to the people of the same gender and opposite gender.
spooky3
(34,476 posts)OK in your sphere, perhaps because you understand the other well and love each other, is not OK in a workplace environment, especially not, given that women have been treated there in disrespectful and worse ways for eons.
It was the manner in which it was done that I think people found insulting and condescending, as much as anything else. Had he said, "I would like to respond to that" when he didn't like what she said, and waited, who would have found that offensive? Or, if you really believe that she was interrupting and he had never done so (which I do not), he could have said, "Please let me finish my point" and continued talking.

(13 posts)The finger waving is one thing-- when on the Senate floor and trying to make a point. It is quite another thing to be
seemingly unaware of the invasion into another's space. So either Bernie is just clueless that an average person doesn't enjoy having an alien finger flying around in their personal space-- much less a colleague in the midst of pursuing a professional endeavor; or Bernie is intentionally rude. The truth looks to be a combination of both: he is intentionally rude because he simply does not care about being mindful of those around him. He conveyed that message fairly clearly. Not in the least bit Presidential.
Thank you Hillary for making some beautiful points on several issues: the import/export bank; your position on free trade agreements; your support of the safety net for the auto industry.... the list goes on and on.
Senator Sanders made a couple of points, but his boorish behavior dimmed being able to consider him a truly conscientious man.

His staff are just not very good at running the MESSAGING for a national campaign. He is doing -- if not well, OK -- despite them, not because of them. They got the target audience right, but they don't know how to talk OVER the target audience to a wider audience of those who need to be convinced. They never get ahead of anything, they're always in reactive/pander mode. It's why the My Black Friends Tour at the HBCUs went over like a lead balloon, and it's why the "Feisty Bernie" isn't selling, either. You can criticize or challenge without coming off like a boor. He didn't manage to do that, though. That was his Rick Lazio moment.
Al Gore's people told him to loom and intimidate too--it didn't work for him, either, not because of sexism since he was running against Bush, but because it went against his essential demeanor, which was that of a guy who cared deeply about things and was an astute student of them, too. He wasn't a bully so it came off as forced.
In Sanders' case, he came off as someone who has YELLED LIKE THAT BEFORE. It was a complete and total mistake--but who knew it was that easy to trip that guy's wire? Not a good look for him at all. The sexist tinge accusation has more to do with the fact that pretty much anyone who has been in a situation where it's mostly men, and one or two women, in leadership roles, that they've either been the woman on the receiving end of that shit, or seen the woman get treated like that. Dismissed, denied, "Shut up - my opinion is more important than yours" kind of thing. And it doesn't really matter, at the end of the day, if his dismissive snarling was about her gender--it's obvious that he prefers the TRANSMIT mode to the RECEIVE one. And that is NOT a good default setting for a Chief Executive.
He lacks the temperament of a successful candidate for a job where listening to people trying to give you advice is key.

(135,425 posts)The attitude--intentionally, or NOT (and I am willing to concede the latter) -- smacked of the dismissiveness, the "hushing," the disregard that many women have endured and many men have witnessed. It doesn't just happen to women, either--it happens to anyone who doesn't fit the corporate white male paradigm--people of color and of varying ethnicities--anyone who is a "nail that sticks up" as the Japanese say. And we know about the nail that sticks up....it gets HAMMERED DOWN. And that is what appeared to be happening to anyone who watched that exchange--it was just not good.
More to the point, beyond the "hushing" stuff, was the fact that it took SO LITTLE to make Sanders "lose it." And that is what he did--he got I-fooking-RATE about a conversation that was spirited, but he acted like someone was calling his mama names. It calls into question his TEMPERAMENT for the job to which he is applying. And it also brings to mind reports that he is not a very nice person, one-on-one.

(34,476 posts)I was talking and he disagreed or wanted to interrupt - as if he were talking to his two school age children.
This same guy considered himself extremely progressive and supportive of women but always had a way to mansplain sexist behavior in others and was oblivious to his own.

(135,425 posts)I worked for a very ahead-of-the-game 3 star admiral who used to enjoy turning the tables on the shushers and hushers--he'd often require his top brass (overwhelmingly male) to take briefings from junior women, and he hush and shush THEM when they'd try to intimidate the young ladies who were giving the briefs.
It was one of those "mentoring moments" that I found to be very cool, indeed. He gave the junior females an opportunity to run that intimidating gauntlet while he had their back. It boosted their confidence and it taught a lesson to those on his staff with assholish and shush-ing tendencies.
When I met this guy's wife, I figured out why he was so 'with it,' and where he got his "education." She was a remarkable woman and she taught him everything he needed to know about equality of opportunity, even before that became a thing--they both became friends later down the line.

(2,660 posts)The entitlement he demands is absurd.
For all the talk about the 'establishment', Bernie acts like he is the head of it.
His campaign makes no sense. He is not running in every state.
The sense that he is owed is quite obvious.

(34,476 posts)I am uneasy about Sanders, for the reasons noted in this thread. The evidence is so much clearer now as to where some problems lie. Previously I believed he was genuinely committed to the things he said he was committed to, but somewhat idealistic. And I still agree with him on some points.
But I have preferred Clinton for some time, on policy, ability to get things done, and temperament grounds, and thought she handled the bad behavior last night very well.
I still view Sanders as many times better than any of the Republicans.

(51,308 posts)And to my sister and me.
It was said in a very condescending and male privilege type way - exactly like Sanders said it.
My sis and I would shut up, mom - not so much.
I miss my dad, but I hated that attitude of his. We all did.
It creeped me out when I heard Sanders say the same thing and in the same way.
