President Obama's Bilateral Meeting with President Santos of Colombia

Santos was at WH last week. Obama expressed support for peace process and Santos thanked Obama for US support of the process.

Santos speaks English well but chose to speak in Spanish.

Santos was playing to the home audience; that's why he spoke Spanish...it's better, too, for clips of his comments to be played on UNIVISION and TELEMUNDO as well if he speaks Spanish.

The interpreter was pretty sharp--she was off camera but she had to be writing down his comments as he spoke--she was translating long trains of thought, there, and doing it quite accurately too.

Santos said that he hopes that the US and Colombia don't meet in the 1st round and hoped they would meet at a later point in tournament. However, the interpreter said that he hoped the US and COlombia don't meet in the 1st round but look forward to eliminating the US later on. Santos was very diplomatic while the interpreter added a bit of antagonism to his response.
