(6,837 posts)I am not sure how it is going in Honduras but not so well in Ven. By the way, I find nothing nefarious about using military for this purpose. It was or is still being done in Colombia among other places with some success. However, when you just make a show of it and don't actually send the military in places where there would actually be a benefit then its pretty useless. Maduro won't send them into Chavista barrios where much of the violence occurs.

(6,837 posts)Monica Spear Dead: Former Miss Venezuela Killed In Attempted Robbery
The 29-year-old star was travelling with her husband and daughter on the Puerto Cabello-Valencia highway in Venezuela when her car crashed.
Police reports confirmed that Spear and her husband Thomas Henry Berry, 49, were shot and killed by unknown assailants while the couples 5-year-old daughter was injured by a bullet in her leg.
The family was on vacation for the holidays and was traveling in a grey 2002 Corolla Toyota toward the city of Valencia at the time of the attack. Mónica was currently living in Miami and was expected to return to the United States this week.
In an interview with HuffPost Voces, the star confessed she left her native Venezuela due to the insecurity.

(2,035 posts)From Facebook to Twitter, everyone's talking about this atrocity. Wouldn't be surprised if this makes international news. This is an ex- Miss Universe candidate, after all, who was still young and had her life and her husband's taken away from them by a bunch of petty thugs. I tell ya, you may disagree with me on this, but I would feel an immense level of satisfaction if all the malandros in Venezuela were all lines up and executed by a firing squad. I'm sure the world would be a better place without those scumbags.
The worst thing is, it's impossible to NOT politicize this whole thing. After 15 years in power which included even greater concentration of competences into the central government, it's become their responsibility pretty much to guarantee the safety of the people, and the assassination of Monica Spear and her partner is only the latest example that shows just what a poor job they're doing.

(2,035 posts)But I honestly think he's being naive. The government has never shown any indication they want to cooperate with the opposition, even when an even worse crime happened about 8 years ago with the Faddoul brothers, why should they do it now? Just the fact that the government removed a lot of the resources and competences that belonged to certain mayors that got elected last month just because they're opposition shows the kind of people Maduro and his ilk are.

(6,837 posts)You'll see some anti-crime activity pickup in the short term I am sure. However, I just don't think they government is willing to send police to the barrios where the crime mostly originates and occurs since they vote in favor of the government. They don't want to disrupt their benefits they recieve from positions of political power.

(6,837 posts)THis story says they had an accident and were waiting 45 minutes when Spear managed to flag down a tow truck that was circulating the area. As they were being pulled out, the tow truck driver and assistant noticed the 5 subjects and began running towards the GN station about 1.5 km away. Spear and her husband went into their car and the assassins shot 6 times into the car killing the couple and wounding the child. The child apparently is out of danger.

(2,035 posts)"Parece un sicariato" is what he says. "Sicariato" means "planned assassination", as "sicario" means hired assassin. What a fucking scumbag to suggest such a thing instead of accepting that the murders were perpetrated by a bunch of common thugs born and raised into this glorious "revolution".
