Bolivia declares emergency over floods

Civil defence officials say at least 52,000 families have lost everything they own.

Last updated: 12 Feb 2014 06:46

A state of emergency has been declared in Bolivia where devastating floods have affected tens of thousands of people.

In central Bolivia, several bodies are still buried beneath a mudslide that swallowed half a village on Saturday.

Torrential rain is predicted to continue throughout the month.

Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports on aid efforts from the city of La Paz.

Floods in Bolivia leaves 42 dead

The number of people killed by landslides and flooding in Bolivia has climbed to 42, a top official said on Monday.

Fifteen people went missing and 47,466 families were left homeless after torrential rains struck 119 of the South American country’s 339 municipalities last week, Xinhua quoted Defence Minister Ruben Saavedra as telling reporters.

The worst-hit area was in Bolivia’s central Cochabamba province, he added.

Deputy Education Minister Juan Jose Quiroz announced on Monday that classes continued to be suspended in 487 schools across the country.
