Extradited leader of the AUC paramilitary group Salvatore Mancuso said the 2006 reelection of former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe was financed by paramilitaries.

In an interview with Caracol Radio, Mancuso revealed that he worked with Uribe’s advisor, Jairo Andres Angarita, to give financial and logistical support to Uribe’s 2006 reelection campaign.

The infiltration of paramilitary groups into Colombian politics has become popularly known as "parapolitics". Former president Alvaro Uribe and dozens of his former officials have been implicated before, but this is the first time that Mancuso, once the most powerful paramilitary leader in the country, directly implicated the former president.

“In the reelection of President Uribe, I gave input to commander Andres and hired buses so they could promote propaganda and move people for Uribe’s campaign,” said Mancuso from his U.S. jail cell.

...Georgetown, advising a prestigious international legal commission (the one on Israel's firing on the peace boat) and enjoying special protection of the U.S. State Department, for instance, in the Drummond Coal death squad case. Letter from the State Dept. telling the judge he shouldn't force Uribe to answer a subpoena--cuz why? Cuz, my educated guess: He knows too much about U.S./Bush Junta collusion with his criminal regime--on the death squads, on illegal domestic spying (even on judges and prosecutors, and reportedly to draw up "hit lists" of trade unionists) and probably on cocaine trafficking.

To some, his mask is still on.

I don't mean to be picayune but it really galls me to see the honors and protections that our government has lavished on this mafia boss cum former president. The U.S. government reviles leaders who fight for universal free health care, who greatly reduce poverty, who greatly expand literacy and education, who enfranchise new people, inspire public participation, even out wealth discrepancies and expand human rights--leaders like Chavez in Venezuela and Morales in Bolivia--leaders who DON'T kill trade unionists and other advocates of the poor--and lauds and protects this criminal fascist, Uribe, whose only accomplishment in office was to spend $7 BILLION of U.S. taxpayer money killing people, spying on people and brutally displacing 5 million peasant farmers.

The guy's got a mask carved in Washington DC.
