South Florida Democrats walk fine line on Cuba

Good to see Fla. Dems taking well reasoned firm positions.

South Florida Democrats walk fine line on Cuba

{snippets}

U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Frederica Wilson, who both represent parts of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, have long standing relationships with the Republican Cuban-American members of Congress.
< >
"What my position is is that I have always believed that the relationship with the United States needs to be earned. What I'm hopeful about is the opportunity to push for those concessions and those human rights that the Cuban regime still has not granted and they still continue to oppress their people. So we'll have an opportunity to be at the table with them to push for those things but I believe that the relationship with the United States should be earned," Wasserman Schultz said.
< >
"I defer all of that to my Cuban friends. That's something that is personal to them. Just like I have my personal issues as an African-American. They have their personal issues and opinions. And I often leave that to them," Wilson said.

They want to look out for their own particular constituents, who keep electing them, but they are afraid to cross the Cuban National Foundation and its powerful allies.

As South Florida changes, as the "exile" chokehold on Florida politics dissipates, these two will be left without their masters, and they will look far less effective to those who've been sending them back to office continually.

What a huge disappointment they are. They are NOT driven by Democratic principles. They are failed Democrats.

and she has never responded to any of my messages asking her to explain her position on Cuba, which is why i've never even bothered to vote for her. She only answers to Mauricio Claver-Carone and the US-Cuba Democracy PAC when it comes to this issue. The rest of these "Dems" are no surprise, the only one that disappointed me was Alan Grayson, who came out parroting the same garbage on Cuba just a few weeks ago.

“I’m concerned that I see the carrot and not the stick. I don’t see what kind of punishment will be left to inflict on the Cuban regime if it maintains its dictatorial ways and continues to deny, particularly younger Cubans, the opportunities they would have if they lived in a country that functions as a part of the real world,” says Grayson.

He says the U.S. needs to set deadlines for Cuba before the embargo is lifted. Without an amended plan, he says the embargo has a zero-percent chance of being lifted by Congress."

Congressman with Guts, yeah right. Until anti-embargo Cuban-Americans start getting elected to congress, i see no movement to end either the embargo or travel ban. Too many congressional sock-puppets blindly follow the Ros-Lehtinen-Diaz-Balart line on Cuba.
