Peru Suffered Brutal Massacre, and Ex-President May Be to Blame

Peru Suffered Brutal Massacre, and Ex-President May Be to Blame
Published 29 September 2016 (9 hours 32 minutes ago)

Fifty-two innocent suspects were acquitted, but the real perpetrators behind the heinous "Baguazo" violence have still not faced justice.

Hundreds of riot police equipped with military-grade weapons, tear gas, and helicopters descended on the Devil’s Curve in Peru’s Amazon region on June 5, 2009, to forcefully break up a blockade of at least 2,000 mostly Indigenous protesters, armed only with traditional spears, voicing outrage over the newly-launched U.S.-Peru free trade agreement.

Chaos ensued in the militarized crackdown, killing at least 32 victims in an infamous massacre known as the “Baguazo.”

Seven years later, no one has been held responsible for the bloodbath that blotched Peru’s history as the most violent political clash since the height of the government’s conflict with the notorious guerrilla army, the Shining Path. Many argue that Peru’s then-President Alan Garcia, aided and abetted by Washington, should be held ultimately responsible.

Peru: WikiLeaks cables shed light on US massacre role
Saturday, June 14, 2014
By Christian Tym

WikiLeaks cables released on June 9 shed new light on the United States' role in the Bagua Massacre in Peru on June 5, 2009.

The cables suggest then-US ambassador Michael McKinley may have encouraged the Peruvian government to use force against protesters in an operation that cost 10 protesters and 24 police officers their lives.

Indigenous groups in the Amazon had been blockading highways for seven weeks. They were protesting against decrees passed by Peru’s then-president Alan Garcia.

The decrees were passed to fulfil the terms of the US-Peru free trade agreement (FTA). Garcia made use of sweeping executive powers to pass 101 decrees in three months.

Post from a deeply conscientious human rights activist, "magbana," whom as you may recall drew out the most loathesome fascist trolls. She was intensely dedicated to a better world, and was nastily, predictably harassed by trolls like so many other progressives:

THE MOST INCREDIBLE VIDEO FROM BAGUA -Please Watch

Folks: I have seen a lot of footage from Bagua, but there is nothing like this. It appears an independent film crew went to Bagua to cover the indigenous protest. These videos place you right in the middle of everything and the video is very clear. What you see very up close is the savagery of the police and their uncontrollable hatred of the Indians. Please watch these 2 videos - first one is about 8 minutes and the second one is 6:30 minutes.

Also, please consider passing these along to others.

As you may recall, the Peruvian government has acknowledged in the last week, that the indigenous Peruvians did NOT have guns, only had their spears which they carried with them during their protest. The Peruvian government has admitted the Peruvian indigenous people did NOT shoot the police, which leaves only the police who ended up shooting other police in their haste to murder the indigenous people.

Dozens of Indigenous Absolved in Peru's 2009 'Baguazo' Massacre

According to autopsy reports, the police killed in the massacre died from gunshots. Witnesses say Indigenous protesters were only armed with spears.

Dozens of Indigenous people in Peru have been absolved Thursday of accusations that they were responsible for a massacre seven years ago, known as the “Baguazo,” that killed at least 32 people, including several police, during an intense conflict as the military cracked down on protesters fighting to block oil drilling in the Amazon rain forest.

After four years of trial, the criminal court of Bagua stated that the people accused of blocking the roads were absolved "because the defense of the environment" was a "superior purpose," according to the CNDDH, a collective of 78 human rights groups in Peru.

The court also threw out the prosecutors' allegations that the people accused of homicide were carrying guns, as the medical experts had found, and that they were the direct authors of the homicides.
