poll for name of group
Last edited Thu May 14, 2015, 01:35 PM - Edit history (2)
I didn't realize there are no hosts in this group. I asked Skinner about changing the name of the group to:
Omaha Steve's Labor Group.
He said, "ask the group "
So, let's vote!
I will keep the poll open for 24 hours
Edit to add yellerdawg's great explanation for this
Post #5
"Omaha Steve's Labor" is a tribute to a working man who toiled for years supporting labor - regardless of views, recs, replies.
He has demonstrated a rare personal dedication and commitment, a passion of the highest order. He has shown us a thing is only as small as we let it be. For these reasons, Steve has made his labor posts and other contributions a critical element of Democratic Underground. Steve did this.
We have a chance to recognize Steve and the example he has set. We have a chance to do something he will remember and treasure, even if only for a short time.
We have a chance to tell Steve, "We will remember."
And we will need more Omaha Steve's in the future.

(16,104 posts)No one has reminded us of this like Omaha Steve. Not just at "Labor Movement" but cross-posted wherever he finds people who could and should care.
And, as American labor has always done, he has enriched us with so much more than just showing up for work!
Omaha Steve is the beating heart of DU labor!

(17,997 posts)Absolutely! Well said

(14,498 posts)As much as I appreciate Omaha Steve, (and believe me, I do) since when does DU "personalize" groups and forums this way?
To me, it's trivializing the topic ( i.e. Labor) . It's bigger than one person. WAY bigger.
I vote for Steve for host/moderator/leader.... maybe even dictator. But no.... it is not any sense any one person's "group".
Nice sentiment. But BAD idea.

(17,997 posts)I respect your opinion. I completely disagree with you but I respect your opinion
There is no one, and never has been, anyone that has contributed to labor on DU like OS has. Honoring him with a part of the group name is well deserved. IMHO

(17,997 posts)That has posted as much for labor. We have no one that has posted as long for labor
Just like streets have names in honor of people, it's a way to honor what he has done. Well know we won't have him much longer and what he will remember will be lost sooner.
I totally respect your opinion. Just explaining why I think what I think
TBF
(32,111 posts)on behalf of workers, poverty, economic inequality. Steve knows I think he should be the head host of the Labor Forum - I have pm'ed that to him in the past. But in terms of actually naming forums/groups after folks it seems like that should be a really well thought out process rather than give in to emotion because someone happens to be ill. For example, we lost SmileyRose last year - she posted every damned day for single payer. Nobody named anything after her. I dunno, I just feel like everyone who is actively working on these issues is important. I guess that's the socialist in me talking.
marym625
(17,997 posts)And she should have received some honor IMHO.
There are many that do much. But there are few that stand out. And when someone stands out for a decade or more, in a certain area, I think we should honor that

(32,111 posts)Just noting there are many other hard-workers on this site as well. Judy Lynn on Latin American issues and Good Reads. K Pete in GD.
Should we name the lounge after SalmonChantedEvening? I look for the kittens every Sunday morning. If so do we still remember

Just musing. I'm not a subscriber to this group so it really doesn't matter.

(16,104 posts)Just between me and you, the 2 Democratic Senate bills passed cloture.
Now Senate reconsidering TPA and TAA, the other 2 bills of the Democratic package rejected Tuesday.
Will the 2 or 3 new bills be enough to add some "progressive cover" on TPP?
We shall see...
marym625
(17,997 posts)And the the bill to stop currency manipulation will never pass the house. But the TPA will, which basically passes the TPP.

(17,997 posts)I am so glad this was done. Especially so that when OS can't remember all he's done and how much we appreciate it, he can see this and he will know.
