Sales of Plug-in Electric Vehicles Will Grow Strongly through 2020

The Obama Administration has made putting a total of 1 million electric vehicles on American roads by 2015 a centerpiece of its transportation policy. In response, automakers in Japan and the United States ramped up production of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) quickly over the last 2 years. The practical challenges of launching new models and expanding PEV sales to mainstream consumers, however, have proven more difficult than automakers or policymakers foresaw. According to a new report from Pike Research, around 410,000 PEVs will be sold between 2011 and 2015 in the United States, and cumulative U.S. sales will not reach the 1 million mark until 2018.

Good trend or only a drop in the bucket? Have you ever considered an electric vehicle?

Plugs will also become more common.

People in apartments and townhouses won't be part of the first wave, but the technology will eventually be available for everyone. Apartments will start installing chargers as demand increases and public chargers will also become more available.

One thing I do know is that once you drive electric, you don't want to go back to gas. There is a growing population of drivers who will only drive electric.

The car I bought before the one I have now was not a hybrid because hybrids were new and still out of my price range. If popularity of plug in cars continues I have no doubt it will be the same.
