State regulators say at least 84,000 gallons of water contaminated with oil and chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing spilled from a broken well-head in a field about 4 miles north of Windsor.
A mechanical failure at about 9:30 a.m. Monday sent a smelly stream of steaming, greenish fluid onto soil and required fire trucks testing air every 30 minutes to ensure leaking natural gas was not about to explode and the use of a vacuum truck to try to suck up the liquid, state natural resources spokesman Todd Hartman said.
The flow from the well bore was stopped more than 30 hours later.

About 17 percent of 2,078 oil and gas spills that companies reported since January 2008 have contaminated groundwater. Fracking wastewater is one of the most common substances spilled.

(16,993 posts)How long are these companies going to destroy the planet before they're stopped? They don't even attempt to capture the natural gas, they just burn it off with a flare because it would be too expensive to capture it. What a waste of natural resources.
When I get my natural gas bill for heating, it sure seems to be a valuable commodity, worth saving.

(16,993 posts)In the report I read, North Dakota oil companies were fracturing for oil, and just burning off the natural gas that was released, stating it would be cost prohibitive to capture it. The fumes from the flares are polluting the air and causing health issues for animals and people in the area.
Apparently, this is OK until 2015 according to this news report: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/18/us-usa-fracking-emissions-idUSBRE83H0UH20120418

(1,789 posts)The townhall by Representative Beth McCann was really a propaganda pitch for the oil and gas industry, telling us how wonderful it is.
30 inspectors for 50,000 wells. That means each inspector must inspect 1667 wells per yer....an impossible task.
This is something that has to be stopped, but when you have a governor that actually makes commercials for these guys it is a little hard to fight.
The politicians say they don't want to stop it because it is too much of an economic driver in Colorado....so is child prostitution..doesn't mean we should do it.
