UK: 80,000 Without Power, Storm Windspeeds Hit 112 Mph

Tens of thousands of homes are without power across England and Wales, after winds of up to 112mph battered the UK on Wednesday.

The Met Office issued a rare red warning, with the hurricane-force gales causing severe travel disruption. Train services in many parts of the UK remain cancelled while some roads are closed. Debris and other objects picked up by the winds caused damage to power lines across the UK, with Wales bearing the brunt.

About 80,000 properties are still without power, according to the Energy Networks Association. Some 60,000 of these are in Wales. The organization says that engineers have already restored power to another 145,000 homes and businesses since the storm hit.

Forecasters say Thursday will be relatively calm, but warn that yet another area of low pressure coming in from the Atlantic could bring 80mph on Friday.

Read up on Rossby waves, and how Arctic warming has disrupted them. The storms in the UK and the Eastern US, and the California super-drought form a pattern that points straight back at our tailpipes and power plants.

"People living on Britain's west coast have been advised to take action and stay indoors after the Met Office issued a red alert for 108mph winds battering Wales."

"Forecasters said a storm front was on its way that would bring heavy rain, powerful winds, blizzards and snow across the UK today, but the red severe weather warning - the highest level possible - is a rare occurrence."

"It means that there is a high likelihood of power outages, fallen trees and significant damage to property across north Wales and north-west England."

Here is an extract of the first portion of a 1991 book from Cambridge University dealing with historic storms in Britain, the North Sea and Northwest Europe. Not knowing the storm severity index for the recent storm, it is difficult to place where it would sit on the scale shown on page 9, but it is definitely not a singular event.
