Alaska nearing 4 million acres burned this season

FAIRBANKS - Nearly 4 million acres have burned in Alaska as of Saturday morning, and four new blazes Friday pushed the active fire total to 303.

Multiple days of moderate weather continue to keep much fire activity minimal to moderate, allowing firefighters to improving fire lines and perform burnouts. But fire activity was expected to increase throughout Saturday as relative humidity decreases with warm temperatures and a lack of precipitation.

The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center reports that 3.91 million acres, or about 6,100 square miles, have burned — making this the sixth worst fire season in Alaska, right behind 1969 when 4.23 million acres burned.

Fire behavior around Tanana was described as active to extreme on Friday — the numerous fires near Tanana area have burned 508,423 acres in total.
