Organic panty liners recalled after traces of weedkiller found

More than 3,000 boxes of Organyc-brand panty liners pulled in France and Canada after glyphosate detected in range of hygiene products

Three thousand boxes of organic panty liners have been pulled from shop shelves in France and Canada after they were found to contain tiny amounts of herbicide, Italian manufacturer Corman said on Wednesday.

Corman said it conducted its own analysis after a French consumer magazine reported the presence of glyphosate, the active ingredient of Roundup weedkiller made by agricultural giant Monsanto, in the cotton-based product of the Organyc brand.

In a report published on Tuesday, the magazine 60 Millions de Consommateurs said its testers had detected glyphosate in five of 11 feminine hygiene products they analysed, including tampons and panty liners.

Corman said it ordered external analyses that “confirmed residual traces of glyphosate” in its panty liners, adding that it was recalling 3,100 boxes from the lot in question as a “precaution”.

Sounds like the organic cotton they sourced wasn't as organic as they thought NickB79 Feb 2016 #2

Although the amounts were tiny – about 25 nanogrammes per gramme – “these traces should not be present in organic cotton”, Corman said, adding that it would investigate its suppliers, mainly in the US and India.

FYI, 25 ng/g is 1 BILLIONTH of a gram. You'd need over 1,000 TONS of these panty liners to obtain just one gram of glyphosate!

The most amazing thing about this article to me is that we can even detect such trace amounts in the first place.
