..and isn't that the strategy after July 5? Consider this, Putin needs another naval base in the Med, and Greece is the ideal location for many reasons.
How much does Greece owe? Small change for Vlad, and the prestige of gaining a foothold on the European Continent, priceless. If the Greek people reject austerity, we can look for this next move in the game.

(17,064 posts)Yes it would mean Greece leaving NATO in addition to EU. But subsidizing Greeces economy would be a small price for Russia to have airforce and naval bases in the Eastern Mediterranean. Plus, it's a stick in the eye tit for tat to the U.S. for interfering in Ukraine.

(92,176 posts)much they would jump in if Greece leaves the EU.
The problem is I don't think Greece has a lot of natural resources. If they did, that would be another story

(5,166 posts)China has enlarged its sphere of influence throughout the South American continent and wouldn't they just love to come to the aid of a European country and wield influence they never would have dreamed of until very recently.

Here's a graphic explanation of that debt

I can't guarantee the site! It was just a google lookup destination.
(eta: looks to me like the classic situation where the victim is unable to even pay the interest, to keep the scam going, and is now going to be kneecapped by goons ("austerity" , else die.)
So such a deal would put Russia or China on the hook to pay off those creditors.
How would that benefit Greece?
I can't see how it would benefit Russia or China.
Russia is signing major economic (infrastructure - not military) deals with Greece, in joint ventures. No doubt these will benefit Russia, but they wouldn't be signed by the present Greek gov't if they weren't also of benefit to Greece.
China has officially said that they want a quick EU solution to the Greek crisis. And that makes sense, since China wants to trade and do business with the EU, not to "take them over".

(561 posts)..I'm sure that could wipe out Greece's debt, providing Greece kicks out NATO. It is an effective counter to NATO's continuing encirclement of the old USSR including our adventures in the Ukraine. It's starting to look like old General Smedley was right, it is the war of the bankers.
But NATO getting kicked out of Greece? Who do they think they are? DeGaulle?
