3. All warfare is asymetical ...

... it it wasn't, there would never be a winner.

But, anyone who provokes a war with an obviously superior enemy is either deranged or suicidal.

11. Not sure if Vietnam is really relevant

given that the forces which rolled into Saigon were NVA forces (i.e. the regular armed forces of North Vitenam), which is not what is usually meant by asymmetric warfare.

17. The peace treaty helped, of course.

Since we had no forces to fight the NVA and no troops on the ground, with a valid peace treaty--and moreover had refused to supply money to the South Vietnamese military--it's hard to see how tanks rolling into Saigon says much about us. Except that we didn't supply promised money and arms to an ally.

It's also asymmetric when one side, for PR and military reasons not involving the enemy itself concedes some tactics. The result is usually a non-win for both sides--a frozen conflict, something that usually winds up killing and hurting more than an actual conclusion to the conflict--or the eventual winning of a frozen conflict when one side simply stops fighting.

10. Warfare in Vietnam was asymetrical as well ...

... one side had the will to fight, the other didn't

The will to fight can be a much more important force multiplier than weaponry. The Americans were defeated in Vietnam because they had no will to fight and no reason to stay. Israel on the other hand, even though it lacks the will to deal the Palestinians a decisive defeat -- cannot very well pick up and leave, they have no where to go. There are lots of Arab states, there is only one Jewish state.

So, this will go on and on forever, with Palestinians provoking and Israelis dealing out limited retaliation.

13. ah yes the Palestinians always provoke even when there is a cease fire and Israel breaks it

via a targeted assassination, that killed a couple of children as well

quite frankly IMO there is blame to go around on this and neither side is solely responsible

doesn't do much to clear the air after a turd like that hits the floor.

Of course, it doesn't look much different from the rhetoric I see from some "pro-Israeli" corners, just with the names flipped around... Still, I find those posts fucking vile too.

Stuff like that isn't helping us any, and I see no reason to mount even a really weak defense for it.

It was a regretful thing to say. Being upset does not excuse it. Your tolerance in continuing to converse with me is appreciated. I hope you can forgive me. I will never make another statement like it. I want to be respectful when I address someone who is Jewish. Should I not say Jew? Is Jewish preferable?

Our viewpoints are diametrically opposed. But I wish to continue to be able to discuss this hotbed issue. I respect your religion but I am unhappy with Israel's policy. Please forgive me for the inappropriate comment. It made me look like a horses ass.
