In response to a joint Israeli-Palestinian memorial ceremony organized by Combatants for Peace in the Tel Aviv Harbor, Naomi Enoch, chair of the state-owned company that operates the harbor, said that the ceremony was an outrage, and condemned its participants. In the last year, 67 Palestinians were killed by Israel, and four Israeli citizens were killed by Palestinians.
Combatants for Peace, a movement of Israeli and Palestinian ex-fighters devoted to reconciliation, ending the occupation and peace, holds a ceremony each year on the eve Israeli Memorial Day in commemoration of everyone who died in the conflict. This year, the event was held in the Tel Aviv Harbor, a trendy outdoor mall full of shops and restaurants and run by a state-owned company called Otzar Mifaley Yam (Treasure of Sea Initiatives). When Enoch, chair of the companys board, heard about this, she released the following statement:
<snip>
According to the IDF Spokespersons Unit, 16,774 Israeli soldiers have died since the founding of the state in 1948, including 50 in the last year. As these deaths include those resulting from accidents, disease, suicide (in the last decade, an average of 30 soldiers committed suicide each year), suicide bombings and combat I asked the IDF to send a breakdown of the causes of death of these 50 soldiers. The request was denied.

(550 posts)Pardon my ignorance, but isn't humanizing the other side (and in this case, having each side recognize the suffering of the other) a very strong step toward peace? Not to say that this is the end of the conflict, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. No?
azurnoir
(45,850 posts)but I guess humanizing Palestinian is not to be allowed
however I did find the suicide rate for IDF somewhat surprising
Lawlbringer
(550 posts)why lump that in as the fault of the Palestinians?
azurnoir
(45,850 posts)Ineither I nor the article lump that in as the Palestinians fault for me it is merely a surprise, we have an IDF reservist who posts here and from I read of their posts IDF is the ultimate service to Israel and the same poster has stated in the past that IDF has replaced other institutions as a social cohesive in Israel

(58,724 posts)Orders from the anti-hasbara brigade?
azurnoir
(45,850 posts)is that why you apparently disapprove of what these Israeli's (for the most part) have to say?
oberliner
(58,724 posts)A lot of overlap between the two sites. Especially in the comment thread.
Just wondering if the anti-hasbara handlers gave orders to switch over to posting articles from 972mag instead of Mondoweiss on sites like this one.
Trying to keep track of how the minions are being directed these days.
By the way, apostrophe is used for possessive, not plural.
azurnoir
(45,850 posts)minions of what?
Now there is a difference between Mondoweiss and +972 in that Mondo is what could be called a 'vanity' blog, being that it is run by and named for Philip Weiss, whereas +972 is run by a conglomerate of different writers and is dedicated to none of them as individuals
my use of the apostrophe was intended to be both plural and possessive

(58,724 posts)Hard to keep track of what is in the playbook these days. The marching orders from Ali Abuminah and friends. The BDS community instructions and guidelines.
You used the apostrophe incorrectly.

(45,850 posts)Ali hasn't me the day's orders yet, perhaps because he knows we've been 'found out'

(90,061 posts)Might possible should be: Israelis', for plural possessive, to avoid Israelis's, but I'd have to look it up, and if I remember right, otherwise reasonable people fight over that issue.
azurnoir
(45,850 posts)and I thought of that seconds after I made the post however a combination of laziness and amusement at the 'issue'kept me from changing it
