What I didn't know is that Lana Wachowski is transgender...I had no idea about this at all. I guess I never really knew much about them. I'm glad she is telling her story...look at the joy in her face! (not a fan of the pink hair though).
I can't wait to see this movie!

(19,926 posts)It was known in the industry for a long time, but then I know someone who worked on a couple of the Matrix movies, not sure how well known it was outside of it. It's good that someone like this with the reputation of making a movie like the Matrix is out in public with this. Hopefully it opens up more minds.

(19,926 posts)that even someone who doesn't get an operation is still transgendered? If so, I apologize for the mistake, and then I've learned something new.

(16,685 posts)I don't pretend to understand and probably never will but you can enjoy dressing up in clothing of the opposite sex without actually feeling like your physical body doesn't match the sex that you feel like you should be.
Yes, transgender does indeed describe many people who feel that way who haven't actually gone through a sex change operation.

(385 posts)Transvestite: wears clothes of opposite sex, usually in private, or in public but usually not 100% of the time. Does not wish to ultimately change genders.
Crossdresser: same as transvestite
Transsexual: person who desires (or does) live as the opposite sex. May or may not have surgery on their genitals, but likely will (or does) take hormones, gets their name legally changed, etc.
Transgender: umbrella term which can mean transvestite, transsexual, or other related terms (people who feel they are part male / part female, etc).
Lana was always a transsexual person (note transsexual is used as an adjective here rather than a noun). She just decided to actually go through with the changes... 6 years ago? Something like that. Lana was never a transvestite.
And if you want to be even more confused, there seems to be a passive movement that is seeking to eliminate the word transsexual and replace it with transgender. So transgender would now = someone who has or wants to change their sex (with or without surgery) and not an umbrella term any longer.
