2. Reminds me of a political scientist's prediction some time ago

It was this hair-brained idea that the US would split up like the Soviet Union, with different areas of the country siding with different world powers. The crux of the stupidity was that a lot of the states that were "close" to each other were in fact extremely different ideologically.
