An openly gay Republican has become the first of his party to feature his same-sex partner in a political ad.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the ad showed Carl DeMaio, who is running for congress in California, hoisting a rainbow flag at a pride parade, and holding hands with his partner Johnathan Hale at a rally.
Over the clip, the narrator says: He believes in equality and diversity, and is a defender of our personal freedoms, and that he isnt afraid to be different.
Political commentator Stuart Rothenberg told CNN: Other openly gay candidates in the past didnt want to draw that much attention to it.

The actual ad is at the link provided, but I'm not going to do his advertising for him. Still, it is an important point in LGBT political history.

(40,212 posts)I understand that politics is complicated and that a person's sexual orientation should not dictate their political affiliation, but I always find it interesting when a person is a member of a political party that is openly opposed to their own civil rights.

(14,449 posts)He probably is a Republican because of the economic differences between the Republicans and Democrats. That is why they have the Log Cabin Republicans which is probably what this guy is. Look we need to have the Republicans change too and support equality rights. Perhaps he is in the mold of the 1970's Republican who was not a wacky nut like today. I only stick up for him because at least he is trying to change the Republican party ..someone has to start.
