I'm making a split pea soup with smoked ham hocks. Carrots, celery, onions, spuds, etc. The usual suspects.
I've got a grinder roll going stale, so I'll make garlic croutons out of that, for a topping.

Finally getting the maple in my front yard cut down tomorrow, now that it's already dropped about 1/3 of the leaves. Still hoping I won't have to rake as much. Promised one of the people at the local butcher's a lot of the firewood, since we only burn stuff up to maybe 6 inches across and don't have a splitter.

(14,733 posts)A few years back, it had totally crushed the old ceramic sewer line, and this year, roots had already invaded the end of the new plastic one that we paid thousands of bucks to get. It's also so big that the roots go all the way under the house and actually have cracked the back patio concrete. Not to mention the enormous amount of raking attendant on a 50-60 ft tall tree, and the constantly clogging gutters on both my and the neighbours' houses. It's also not a 'pretty' maple. Its fall colours are dingy yellow, and gray-brown. Every windstorm leaves 5-20 ft long downed limbs, and we were worried that one of these days, one of the thigh-thick branches was going to come crashing into the roof.
We're also getting the stump ground out, and hoping to replace it in the spring with a tri-colour beech. It's the last of the original trees planted when the house was put in on the property. We took out the two out back almost as soon as I bought the place, and lost a sour cherry in wind sheer 5-6 years back. But I've got two apples and two black cherries out back now all of which are around a dozen years old, and a volunteer mulberry in one corner that's been fruiting for a few years as well.

Main course was chicken with capers, sauteed peppers, and spaghetti squash with herbs. Oh, and glazed onions. Cippollinis.
For dessert we had rum baba.
The RG put all this together and the wines he selected were so perfect. Everything was perfectly compatible.
He did this after fighting through traffic in CT from Obama's appearance there. He's a super-hero! I'd have been so aggravated that I'd have downed the wines and gone to bed.

(146,218 posts)Finally made it back home to Mexico and will be getting groceries over the next two days, as the cupboards are definitely bare.
I think DH dined well while I was gone, but i think it was mainly dining out.
It's really hot here and another hurricane is heading this way. I am making some menu plans that will not need the stove or oven, but now I'm concerned that the weather might make the grill a bit tricky.
Ah, what a life. Hope everyone is happy and well. Glad to be back.

(9,825 posts)Now that it's turning colder here in the US, I look forward to hearing about your adventures in the HOT zone. What did you miss the most while you were in Italy and traveling back to home base?

(146,218 posts)I just spent a month in the US and got my fill of fast food. I am glad to be back in Mexico and look forward to starting back into my Mexican cooking.
I don't generally miss much when I am away
well, except Popeye's fried chicken.
What have you been up to?
