Related: About this forumI'm looking for a main dish with a dill or somewhat pickled taste to it. Any ideas?
My mom is 87 years old and she hasn't been eating well lately. She says that nothing seems to have much of a taste to it, but she seems to respond well to dishes that have a tangy pickled or dill taste to them like sauerkraut. If you have any recipes like that, that are preferably quick and easy, I sure would appreciate it. I'm going to be out most of the day, but I'll check in periodically. Thanks in advance.

Hope that your mom feels better soon and gets her appetite back!

(9,825 posts)this dish, but their recipe created everything from scratch, vs using ranch dressing from a package. I think someone posted it here.
It's not dill, but it's def. tangy.

(1,451 posts)Try an extra helping of dill relish in egg, tuna, or ham salad. Maybe roll a pickle spear in lunch meat. Google "sauerkraut balls"--they're pretty good! And if she's so inclined, you could have shots of pickle juice and pretend you're at a good jazz bar, reminiscing about past loves

Make a basic potato soup or potato-carrot soup - Recipes found in all cookbooks. Potato soup is simple to make, doesn't take long. After the potatoes (and carrots) are cooked and mashed and soup is simmering, add some grated dill pickle to the soup and let it simmer a few minutes longer. I remember this recipe because potato soup is so bland and thought that the dill pickle was just what the soup needed.
A good soup for seniors, easy to digest, has cooked vegetable, milk, and a little extra taste to pick-up their taste buds. And make it with Love! I wish my Mom was still around so I could make her some soup.

(2,674 posts)Forgot about reubens until I made some for lunch yesterday. Lots of recipes on the internet, very simple, doesn't take long, just have to have the right ingredients. I like to use pastrami instead of corned beef, more peppery flavor. The sandwich has a good sour taste with the sauerkraut. I don't use thousand island on mine, but make a dressing with Mayo, Dijon mustard and a little sweet pickle relish.
We ate our reubens with bowl of home made chicken gumbo soup and some slices of dill pickle. Nice meal, enjoyed by all..
