My housemate Steve comes home from work with a dog this morning. It was in the parking lot of the truck company where he works, sopping wet and shivering during the thunderstorm last night. He put him in his pickup out of the rain and checked on him every couple of hours while he worked. So at 8:30 he comes home with a dog. I took him down to my vet and he'd been chipped-but the registry only gave information from the shelter where it was done. We contacted the shelter and a couple of hours later they called back with some info. His name is Sam, he's about 5 years old and is a German Shepherd/Blue Heeler mix. The shelter had two contact numbers-one was disconnected and the other was someone in a town about 40 miles away and they didn't know anything.
He's real quiet, well behaved, is leash trained and likes riding in the truck.
My friend Val says she'll talk to her husband about taking him since they lost both their old dogs last year.
Haven't had a chance to take pictures yet but will post them once I do.

(17,276 posts)You did all the right things. And maybe even found him a new home.

(6,011 posts)We are looking at Heeler mixes to adopt, missing our Sally, Border Collie-Heeler extraordinaire.
Since Sally left a big empty place in our lives, in the interim before finding our next dog, I have spent a lot of time trying to reconnect lost dogs with their owners by looking at
Craigslist Lost and Found ads
PetHarbor.com (shelters advise using- shelter posts photo/info of animals that are in their custody as well as "animals found by the public" and kept at home rather than the pound), and
Facebook "__________(fill in town or county) Lost and Found Pets" groups.
I've reconnected quite a few!
Sadly, some found dogs have been abandoned somewhere, but there is a good chance someone is really missing Sam. I hope the owner finds him at the shelter right away because he'll be put up for adoption PDQ to make room for more. I appreciate that your friends might want him, but there are plenty of other dogs needing a home if his owner claims him! It sounds like he was rehomed since the chip info was not current.
Many people don't know that microchipping doesn't work unless you register current contact info with the company.

There was one sad story that occurred here in northern California where a couple found a similar herding dog mix on a Sunday winter evening, no vet open to scan for microchip, brought her to their home city 5 hours south of where she was found to try to communicate with her town's shelter & Craigslist from home, she got out of their yard and hasn't been seen since.
Good luck to Sam and Thanks to Steve and you for helping a lost, wet dog, whoever Sam will go home with!

(7,581 posts)Bless you guys for taking this pup. I don't know where you live, but if he got out of a shelter, he's lucky - most of the southern and Ohio shelters are very high kill.
He's adorable!

(30,761 posts)Thanks for doing this.
We have a dog right now who lost her owner to a sudden death. We will have her for a long time, maybe permanently. Our ten-year-old doggie gets along great with her.
We usually have rescues here. I can't imagine not having a dog.

(11,065 posts)He also seems to be well cared for by someone. Maybe you could put up signs in the area or even an ad in the paper. If that doesn't end up doing anything you may end up having a new doggie!
Bless you for taking in this poor sweetie!
