Stephen King: why I want assault weapons banned

King owns three handguns, but he questions why gun advocates need deadly weapons like the Bushmaster or the AR-15:

"I have nothing against gun owners, sport shooters, or hunters, but semi-automatic weapons have only two purposes. One is so that owners can take them to the shooting range once in awhile, yell yeehaw and get all horny at the rapid fire and the burning vapour spurting from the end of the barrel. Their other use – their only other use – is to kill people.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings, gun advocates have to ask themselves if their zeal to protect even the outer limits of gun ownership has anything to do with preserving the Second Amendment as a whole, or if it's just a stubborn desire to hold on to what they have, and to hell with the collateral damage."

But his three handguns are not?

Statistically, it's almost certainly the opposite...guns like the ones King owns are much deadlier than semi-automatic rifles he wants to see banned.

The elimination of handguns (assuming a ban worked 100%) instead of semi-automatic rifles would reduce the gun death rate in the U.S. to a fraction of what it is today and bring it in line with other developed countries.

The elimination of semi-automatic rifles (again, assuming a ban worked 100%) instead of handguns would have no discernible impact on the gun death rate in the U.S.

Ban all semi-auto guns. Long, short or in between. If ya' can't kill somebody with 6 shots from a revolver ya' got no business with a gun anyway.

He might as well have said 'the Ford, or the pickup'. 'Bushmaster' isn't any one gun, they make a variety of firearms.

It doesn't help the whole credibility thing along, you know.
