An escaped convict broke into the home of a southwest Iowa couple and held them at gunpoint for several hours before one of the hostages shot and killed the intruder, police said Tuesday.

Rodney Eugene Long, 38, broke out of the Clarinda Correctional Facility about 20 miles away on Friday. He is accused of shooting Taylor County deputy Sunday night after stealing a gun in a home burglary and led police on a 40-minute chase, triggering a massive manhunt Monday in the area.

I already know what the response is to this story:

If someone hadn't had an unsecured handgun in the house for Long to grab, then NONE of this would have happened.



First of all, let me say that the article is really hard to follow chronologically, but it seems to end at the old folks' home after an escape and a chase.

Long broke into a home and found the handgun and took them hostage. I think he'd have grabbed a different weapon if not for the gun.

Then there was the car chase, then the bad guy breaks into the occupied old folks' home.

And the old man got the shotgun and did the right thing.

Long was a predator the moment he broke into the occupied home and was at that point fair game.

The handgun had nothing, not-a-thing, to do with it.

How about from the relative ineffectiveness of guns crowd? Not many amongst us contend guns are worthless, just that they're more a hazard than a boon. Thus they're overrated.
BTW, did the couple have a concealed carry permit? - not that it's relevant, but this home defense could've been accomplished without a RTC/ccw license, or an assault rifle. I wonder how the homeowners feel about other aspects of gun control. And he was an ex prison guard himself (the shooter).

If you don't want to own a firearm, don't get one. No one is forcing you to do so, or even advocating that.

According to a Gallup poll, however, the self-reported gun ownership of Democrats has been increasing and is the highest since 1993.

The poll also shows that gun ownership among Republicans has risen, but only slightly.

What are the odds the gun ownership among Independent voters has decreased? And what are the odds that the interest to the right to armed self-defense in the home among Independents has decreased?

Is denigrating gun ownership a way to win elections? Is there any good reason why some focus should not be placed upon economic reforms? Doing away with the criminalization of marijuana? And increasing mandatory prison time for criminals convicted of gun-related crimes?

As well as changing the subject you read the gallup report wrong. Personal gun ownership overall is at 34%. Since 2000, Gallup has asked respondents with guns in their households.. if the gun belongs to the respondent or to someone else. Gallup finds that 34% of all Americans personally own a gun.
.. Democrats who personally own a gun is 28%, democrats NOT owning a gun is 60%, & 13% of other members in HH own a gun. (which begs a few questions about the poll imo).
29% overall of college graduates personally own a gun, 30% 'some college', while 40% of 'no college' own a gun.

Another poll: The share of American households with guns has declined over the past four decades, a national surve... Who did? Mr Bill took liberty with the truth, as politicians sometimes do, was the point. And his opinion of the awb was not supported by the evidence which I've posted in another post of yours. NAFTA, & higher taxes were more the reasons for dem collapse.
