On the KCTV5 Facebook page, many people are congratulating the homeowner for his courage, but it may take even more courage to deal with what comes next.
"It's not easy to take another life unless you are simply a psychopath and have no problem doing that," said counselor Susan Howard-Perry.

(421 posts)Several years ago, she had to shoot and kill a home invader in the middle of the night while I was at work.
It really messed with her mind, she had to get professional help to deal with the fact that she was forced to take another human life, she still has nightmares of that night despite the years that have past since the incident.

(7,981 posts)You're better off securing your home entryways and installing a good alarm system that would deter someone from even trying to break in your home than having to face a home invader.

(17,502 posts)and there are cases of wrong place/wrong time. Sometimes there is are no good options, just the least worst ones.
While non violence is best, pacifism is sometimes impossible or immoral. St. Augustine said it best:

(421 posts)she had put our daughter in the closet, locked the bedroom door, warned the guy that she had called the police and warned him that she had a shotgun, guy busted down the door anyway, so she did what she had to do to survive.
She did the right thing according to the police, but it didn't make it any easier on her, but at least her and our daughter survived to have these feelings.

(331 posts)You have assumed that she could have prevented herself from being chosen as a victim, and then blamed her for the psychological trauma resulting from her failure to do so.
How is that not akin to blaming a rape victim for wearing a skirt that was too short?

(331 posts)then by all means say something different. But the way your post reads, she is responsible for her burns because she chose to fight fire with fire. And that idea, as you have agreed, is disgusting.

(10,164 posts)Even the best options don't always work...at which point you pick the best of what is actually available at the time. If your "Plan B" preparations don't include anything effective, then you have prepared inadequately.

(23,322 posts)Ask Trayvon Martin. Or twenty kids at Sandy Hook Elementary. Or.....oh, wait.......you can't..............
So a violent home invader is on the same moral plane as the children at Sandy Hook? Just wow.

Saving lives takes a strong mind and determined body.

(11,181 posts)Oh right, go shoot 5 or 6 people and you'll feel better, knowing you "did the RIGHT thing". hat should guarantee you a good night's sleep.
Saving lives takes selflessness, empathy and a level head. Taking any life should be an absolute last resort.

(421 posts)And that was my wife's situation, she did everything possible to deter the asshole, but when he broke down our bedroom door, she was out of other options at that point and she did what she had to do, and that was to protect herself and our daughter from serious injury/death.
I do agree with your last sentence, taking a human life should be an absolute last resort.

(11,181 posts)Defending one's home and family is very different from walking around with a loaded gun in public. The cop in the OP is an idiot for suggesting it.

(6,185 posts)They didn't have to worry about the trauma of shooting someone in self defense, they just died.
But their families continue to live on remembering every year on that date what they lost and probably every day. I bet they'd love the option of paying for counseling instead of for flowers every year.
Gun sales continue to soar and violent crime continues to fall, but in all your google dumps you don't seem to ever find any positive stories on self defense? Almost seems like you and some of your little friends have a totally blind spot that can't tell the difference between self defense and crime?
