The RFID future is now...

http://www.armatix.us/Smart-System.778.0.html?&L=7

Smart System consists of a radio-controlled watch that is responsible for gun access and use. A Smart System gun will only shoot if it is within range of this watch. It is possible to release the safety mechanism via the radiocontrolled watch activated by means of a PIN code. As soon as the gun loses radio contact with the watch – e.g. if it is knocked out of the shooter’s hand or in case of loss, theft, etc. – it automatically deactivates itself.

Good link for missing info in SM's post. ManiacJoe Feb 2014 #2
Also, if the shooting hand is disabled, this could result in inability to use the off-hand. Bazinga Feb 2014 #4
I suppose it would make for a nice option for people who want it and can afford it. NYC_SKP Feb 2014 #3

A few downsides to their implementation:
1. The "watch" needs to be worn on the gun hand, opposite to natural use.
2. It would seem that the PIN needs to be entered again if the gun gets out of range of the "watch".

Most gun fights start as fist fights, which is why one should practice operating their gun without thumbs and with the off-hand.

Otherwise, it's just a gimmick.

Anticipating the idiots who would like to see legislation requiring such technology.

Can we also design a breathalyzer to lock-out drunk users?

Just because we can doesn't mean we should.

We could use this technology like breathalyzers are used to lock out drunk drivers.

Gun owners who have had safe storage violations or whose gun was used in a crime could be required to install a RFID to prevent anyone but the owner from firing the weapon.
