Roupe's young life ended Friday night when Euharlee police officers showed up at the door of his home in the Eagle View Mobile Home Park to serve a probation violation warrant for his father.

Maybe lots of folks would see that but I don't. Wanting to be in the marines / ROTC doesn't mean gun nuttery. I went to high school near there. The ROTC recruited heavily, and I was heavily opposed to it... but many kids his age in that area don't have goals as lofty as his were. And yeah, shooting bb guns is a common hobby around there, and so is hunting. I still don't think that is gun nuttery though. MOST folks don't go to those extremes. A few, especially way up in the northwest GA mountains do ... and some of those are downright scary .. not so much for their guns but their 'ideas'.

3. so sad and unnecessary

and less than a mile from my parents' house. I read that the officer began sobbing on the spot when she realized she had shot the kid at point blank range. Goes to show that the lesson of never aiming a weapon unless you mean to kill has not gotten through. In Euharlee there's a new police chief every year, and the officers don't get enough training. It's a small but growing community and the suburbs closer to Atlanta have more money to spend on their police departments. My parents know some of the cops personally, and even let them know when they will be out of town so the cops can check on the house while they're traveling. The cops also check in on elderly residents in that neighborhood regularly to make sure they are OK. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with either of those things. My point is this: there's too much emphasis on solving problems with guns, and not enough on other means of de-escalation. Every day it happens again. This is America; how come we look so powerless when it comes to putting an end to this? Cops should be armed, but with that comes a need for extensive training than some of these cops are apparently getting.

It's negligent homicide, not just manslaughter. She shot without warning or a valid reason, if the story about it being a Wii controller are true (and I believe they are).
