Everytown for Gun Safety facing lawsuit, admits to bogus claims against gun dealers

Everytown for Gun Safety facing lawsuit, admits to bogus claims against gun dealers

A gun control group financed by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is under fire over allegations that it made bogus and inflammatory claims against gun dealers.

Now, at least one dealer is threatening a lawsuit.

Everytown for Gun Safety published a report this week that incorrectly said 48 Vermont gun dealers that placed Internet ads were unlicensed. The report alleged that the dealers may have sold firearms to criminals by not performing legally required background checks, according to The Washington Times.

Everytown admitted the error and has issued an apology.

This isn’t a first for Everytown. PolitiFact and FactCheck.org have both called the group to the carpet for reporting inflated school shooting numbers.

This relationship that "everytown" has with honesty...is starting to look habitual, and cut from the same cloth as CSGV.

Take them for every penny.

But this has become "business as usual" for too many on the pro-control side. Whether it's trying to count 19 year old criminals and "children" killed by guns; trying to categorize shootings over drug deals that occur after hours in a school parking lot as "school shootings" or the above noted situation it seems no lie is too bold for some to attempt to pass off as fact. Sad, really as it shows a complete inability to debate the issue with honesty due to the lack of facts on the pro-control side.

Remember when the Josh Sugarman, gun control advocate extrodanare said THIS...

"The weapons' menacing looks, coupled with the public's confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons."

Says a lot when the side you're on, counts on the public being misled, and confused. Gets back to the "faith" and "dogma" thing I spoke about. You don't have to prove faith... Just believe in it...facts are immaterial... defend the dogma at all costs

This isn’t a first for Everytown. PolitiFact and FactCheck.org have both called the group to the carpet for reporting inflated school shooting numbers.

Let's compare. NRA, lepierre-head, Everytown, MAIG, & Bloomberg himself:
Politifact rates them:

Everytown for Gun Safety: 2 total, both 'mostly false', including the one you noted.
MAIG: ...............3 total, all 3 'half true', which is a push, not bad not good.
Bloomberg: ......10 total, 4 true, 2 mostly true, 2 half true, 2 false.
NRA: ...............15, 1 true, 4 mostly true, 1 halftrue, 2 mostly false, 4 false, 3 pantsonfire
Lapierre-head: 8, 1 mostly true, 3 halftrue, 3 mostly false, 1 false.

Winners: #1 Bloomberg (6/2) --- 75% trueish, 25% falseish (don't count halftrue);
#2: MAIG: 50% true, 50% falseish; only since all are 'half true'; which does not equate to a 'half truth' in the pejorative fashion, just that the comments have truth & falsity about on a par. You could also rate MAIG as 0% true 0% false, I guess.
#3: NRA: (5/9) 5 truish, 9 falseish, ~36% trueish, 64% falseish.
Lapierre-head: (1/4)--- 20% truish, 80% falseish.
EGS: ... 0% true, 100% mostly false, but only two total, small sample size.

So gold medal goes to Bloomberg, poor last place showing to EGS with their small sample, but what's so great about da gunnuts???? And they rarely apologize or retract.

beevul: I noticed you left out the "pants on fire" rating for CSGV.

CSGV only has the one entry which ended up 'pantsonfire'; one is the lowest sample size. I didn't 'leave out' CSGV since my concern was EGS & Bloomberg vs gun groups.
But since you bring it up, tack on ted nugent & guns of America. Nugent has 2 'halftrue' plus 2 pantsonfires, while GOA has one false, also lowest sample size.

Winners:
#1 Bloomberg (6/2) --- 75% trueish, 25% falseish (don't count halftrue);
4 Lapierre-head: (1/4)--- 20% truish, 80% falseish.
5 EGS: ... 0% true, 100% mostly false, but only two total, small sample size
6 GOA: .. 0% false; total 1 false, worse than 'mostly false' of EGS;
7 or 8: Nugent: .. 0%; 2 pantsonfire plus 2 halftrue;
7 or 8: CSGV: 0%; 1 pantsonfire.
Might need to disregard MAIG tho, since they only had the 2 halftrue.

Gun Owners of America (FALSE): The Baucus health care bill "could be used to ban guns in home self-defense."
Ted Nugent (PANTS ON FIRE): Says a picture he posted on Facebook of a man posing in front of five decapitated human heads is "one of the subhuman mongrels our president set free."
Pants on Fire! "I've been a cop in Lake County, Michigan, since 1982 thereabout. I conduct federal raids with the DEA and ATF and U.S. Marshals and the FBI and Texas Rangers."

You proved nothing; Prove what you contend with a link or sources, the burden of proof is on you, not me to go on a possible wild goose chase. Provide an unbiased source, not some rightwing **** website.

Then tell me how many guncontrol advocates you refer to above were convicted of, or charged with, murder? as opposed to nra president harlon carter, who at 17 killed a Mexican & got off scot free, and this guy:

68yo Bob Dowlut... As NRA's top lawyer, a key architect of the gun lobby's campaign.. He helped oversee the NRA's effort to strike down Chicago's handgun ban in the 2010
.. The story of how Dowlut walked away from a murder conviction and rose through the ranks of the NRA has never been told publicly. It begins with the transcript of his murder trial, .. LaPierre and other NRA leaders also did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
... after serving half a decade in prison, and despite solid forensic evidence matching Dowlut's dug-up pistol to the murder, the Indiana Supreme Court found that police had overzealously violated his constitutional rights in obtaining that confession—they reportedly denied him a lawyer despite multiple requests—and his conviction was overturned. Prosecutors gave up on trying the case again when much of their evidence was tossed out with the confession.
..it's unclear whether Dowlut ever told anyone at the gun group about his criminal past.

Mayor Shiela Dixon convicted of embezzlement and pled guilty to perjury.

The case against her has left speculation about her future. While the city of Baltimore has no provision for removing a mayor from office, the Maryland Constitution bars convicted felons from serving in elected office.[1] On January 6, 2010, Dixon announced she would step down as mayor on February 4, 2010.

Mayor Gary Becker

Racine - Two weeks before he was due to be sentenced for child sex crimes, former Racine Mayor Gary Becker visited the juniors section of a Racine department store and purchased small-size lingerie.

That revelation during Wednesday's sentencing hearing, Racine County Circuit Judge Stephen Simanek said in an unusual admission that he had changed his mind about the probation-only penalty he planned for Becker, bringing on instead a three-year prison term.

NEWARK - Corrupt former Guttenberg Mayor David Delle Donna and his wife Anna were each sentenced to four years and three months in federal prison yesterday for tax evasion and extorting cash and gifts from a town bar owner in exchange for official favors.

"Public office is a public trust, and that is the bottom line," said U.S. District Court Judge Harold Ackerman as he laced into the couple at the hearing. "In my judgment, they betrayed the people of Guttenberg and violated their trust."

Samuel Rivera

Mayor With a Past Has a Future in Prison

WHEN a federal judge sentenced former Mayor Samuel Rivera to 21 months in federal prison on Aug. 15, an era ended in this tattered city of nearly 70,000, leaving many here debating Mr. Rivera’s tumultuous past and wondering what is to come

“He was a good politician in his first four years,” said Gary Schaer, the former City Council president who became acting mayor when Mr. Rivera resigned. “But in the last three years, he became inebriated with his own power, he forgot himself.”

On New Year’s Eve 1966, Mr. Rivera shot and killed his brother-in-law Miguel Matos, 23, while showing his young niece how to load the pistol he used as a security guard. A court ruled the death accidental.

In 1980, Mr. Rivera, then a professional wrestler and a police officer in Puerto Rico, slashed his stomach after his partner, Thomas Lopez, shot and killed Aristides Navarro, 22, a suspected drug dealer. Five years later, Mr. Rivera confessed in court that he had falsely claimed that Mr. Navarro attacked him to give Mr. Lopez a defense for having killed the man.

Jeremiah Healy

Healy claimed to have been "roughed up", maced, and arrested outside his sister's bar in Bradley Beach in 2006. Cops allege he was interfering in a police investigation. Healy claimed that he was attempting to intervene in an argument between a couple outside the bar.[12] His claims were rejected by the court and he was found guilty of obstruction of justice on June 22, 2007.[13] Healy appealed the decision while trying to portray himself as having broad public support.[14] On July 2, 2008, Healy's appeal was denied by the state appellate court which upheld Healy's conviction.[15] During his appeal, it was revealed that Healy had attempted to influence the arresting officers.[16] Healy filed suit against the officers in question, alleging that they violated his right to free speech (the case was ultimately denied).[17] Healy appealed the to the State Supreme Court and was again denied.

Larry Langford

On December 1, 2008, Langford, along with investment banker William B. Blount and former state Democratic Chairman Al LaPierre, was arrested by the FBI on a 101-count indictment alleging conspiracy, bribery, fraud, money laundering, and filing false tax returns in connection with a long-running bribery scheme.[4] His public corruption trial ended on October 28, 2009 with convictions on 60 counts, and resulted in his automatic removal from office.[5]

On March 5, 2010, Langford was sentenced to 15 years in prison by a federal judge in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was also fined more than $119,000.

Buddy Cianci

Twice elected Mayor of Providence, he also served as a prosecutor and attorney. Notably, he was forced to resign from office twice due to felony convictions. His first administration ended in 1984 when he pleaded nolo contendere to charges brought against him. His second stint as mayor ended when he was forced to resign following his conviction for one count of racketeering conspiracy, and he served four years in federal prison.

Gordon Jenkins

You're forgiven if you've never even heard of Jenkins. Since 2008, he's been the mayor of Monticello, New York, a Catskills resort town kind of like the one where Dirty Dancing took place. He has also been arrested once a year over the last three years.

The first time was in 2011, when Jenkins pled of guilty to five counts of counterfeiting for selling knock-off Nikes at a store he operated with his girlfriend.

A little over a year later, in July 2012, Jenkins was arrested again, charged with "obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct" after punching a police officer in the back of the head outside his store. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail, and three years probation for that one.

But his arrest in November 2013 was Jenkins' star-making turn. He ranted, raved, cursed and threatened police officers after he was arrested for driving under the influence... The spectacle--all 90 minutes of it--was posted to YouTube where it has now racked up more than 90,000 views. The footage, above, begins with Jenkins muttering "Fucking peckerwood motherfuckers..." and devolves from there.

Tony Mack

TRENTON – Former Trenton Mayor Tony Mack was sentenced to nearly 5 years in federal prison today for corruption during his tumultuous times as mayor of New Jersey's capital city.

Mack, who was elected in 2010, was convicted in February on six counts including extortion, bribery, wire fraud and mail fraud for accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes from federal informants posing as parking garage developers who were looking to build on a plot of city-owned land downtown.

Michael Pembleton

VICKSBURG, Miss. —A former mayor of Sunflower has been sentenced to three years' probation for stealing designer purses.

Michael Pembleton was arrested in March and was accused of $7,000 worth stealing designer bags from the Dillard's at the Pemberton Square mall in Vicksburg, police said.

James Schiliro

Despite impassioned pleas from family and friends of former Marcus Hook Mayor James Schiliro, a Delaware County Court judge on Monday sent him to jail.

Schiliro was sentenced to 10 to 20 months for an alcohol-fueled episode last February in which he had a police car bring a former neighbor - a 20-year-old to whom he said he was attracted - to his home, made him drink wine, and refused to let him leave for 31/2 hours.

During the encounter, Schiliro threatened to kill himself and fired a gun into a stack of papers. The man eventually left and later called police.

James Schiliro

In addition, Schiliro received five years of probation and 50 hours of community service, and was ordered to pay $1,300 in fines and court costs. He is eligible for work release and time off for good behavior.

In November, Schiliro was convicted of recklessly endangering another person, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, official oppression, and furnishing liquor to a minor.

You post a tapeworm post of about 4 feet, try to condense them. Well, so far you're ahead I admit, but I'm gonna have to continue this in the short future, I'm off for the day.

apr2013: Criminals in charge: The not so law-abiding gun owners in the NRA's leadership
The NRA board is populated with a smattering of criminals whose objection to gun laws might be rooted not in their concern for law-abiding gun owners, but their desire to protect fellow criminals. Let us meet the criminals in high places within the NRA's leadership:

Harlon Carter: Murderer, Former NRA President At age 17, Harlon Carter shot and killed a 15-year old Latino boy in Laredo, Texas.. Carter would later claim self-defense.. the acquittal was at the hands of the Texas justice system and Carter was a white man who had killed a Mexican. Carter later joined the US Border Guards and led an operation targeting illegal immigrants called "Operation Wetback."

Ted Nugent: Serial poacher and wannabee presidential assassin .. 2010, Nugent was charged with 11 misdemeanor poaching crimes in California for engaging in illegal hunting methods. He plea bargained and plead guilty to just two of the poaching charges. He also illegally poached a black bear in Alaska, violating the state's seasonal limit of only shooting one bear. Nugent was fined 10,000 dollars and placed on probation for killing the bear unlawfully. ..making thinly veiled threats on the Democratic political leaders of America.

Don Young Republican Congressman from Alaska sits on the NRA's Board of Directors. He has successfully weathered several Congressional investigations regarding political corruption, but his most dangerous action may have been signing Schaeffer Cox's petition justifying the overthrow of the US govt. Cox was sentenced to 25 years in prison

Larry Craig: Last time most of us saw Larry Craig, he was a homophobic Idaho Republican Senator being charged with lewd conduct for soliciting gay bathroom sex with an undercover police officer in.. restroom. He then tried to violate FEC laws by using campaign funds to pay the expenses for his legal defense.. Larry Craig is now on the Board of Directors for the NRA..

David Keene: NRA President.. technically David Keene is not a criminal, but his son who was hospitalized with "severe emotional problems" at least seven times in his youth, was sentenced to ten years in prison for attempted murder when he tried to shoot a fellow motorist in a road rage incident. .. In Keene's desire to protect law abiding owners from the "bad guys" with guns, he apparently overlooked that his son might be one of the "bad guys" with a gun.

Manny Fernandez: NRA board member Manny Fernandez was convicted in 1983 of illegally possessing a machine gun .. Apparently his criminal conviction was of no concern to the NRA since he now serves on their Board of Directors.

FEC violations? That's the best you have on Craig besides being in the closet and pandering to bigots to get elected?
Carter? Nice innuendo. Do you have evidence from the trial, like the transcript, that shows the jury was wrong (assuming the story is even true). All of that is public record, yet your source does not point to any of that. As for his job as head of the Border Patrol, it was not racism. It was enforcing the law and he was following the orders of his superiors.
Nugent is an asshole, but so is Piers Morgan. Nugent might be a racist, but Bloomberg let his inner sheet come out in Aspen.

How is Keene responsible for his adult son exactly?

Outside of Nugent's poaching, I can't verify any of these claims from independent sources. Most of them are either from VPC or use VPC as their main source.

However, the examples given about gun prohibitionists are verifiable from neutral sources, including local papers.
