wanted to confirm or deny something I heard today

Thank you for your time, sincerely.

A man said today that "a county in Texas" had mandated some type of gun ownership, and the crime rate went down dramatically. I realize I can do a Google search, but I figured you all would know the truth or lack thereof to this.

Thank you.

Steve

Georgia City Loses Battle Over Mandatory Gun Ownership Law, Affirms Right Not To Bear Arms

The small city of Nelson, Ga., agreed Thursday to revise an ordinance passed earlier this year that required every household to own a gun.

The measure, passed in April, drew nationwide attention for attempting to make gun and ammunition ownership mandatory. The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a national gun control group, sued Nelson over the law, claiming it was unconstitutional to make those demands of its citizens.

Nelson settled the suit this week when the city council unanimously approved a motion to amend the ordinance, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Here are the additions to the text:

WHEREAS, many members of the City Council believe that possessing a firearm in the home is an effective means to defend residents and the community; and

WHEREAS, the City Council also recognizes that there are other means available to defend families and homes, and the Constitution protects the rights of Americans to choose not to possess a firearm or bring one into the home....

The Brady Center applauded the city council's decision in a statement:

“The Constitution protects not just the right to bear arms, but the right not to bear arms,” said Jonathan Lowy, Director of the Legal Action Project at the Brady Center. “The Brady Center brought this lawsuit to establish that the Constitution protects the rights of gun owners and non-gun owners alike, and all of us must be respectful of each other’s rights. We are pleased that as a result of our lawsuit the City of Nelson has recognized that the Second Amendment protects the rights of the hundreds of millions of Americans who believe that the best way to keep themselves and their families safe is by keeping guns out of their homes.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennesaw,_Georgia

"The town is noted for its unusual gun legislation in response to Morton Grove, Illinois' law mandating gun prohibition. In 1982 the city passed an ordinance [Sec 34-21]
(a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.
(b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony." and
"In 2001, violent crime rates are about 85% below national and state rates. Property crime rates are from 46-56% below national and state rates. From 1999 to 2011, Kennesaw crime statistics reported that both property and violent crimes had decreased, though from 2003 to 2008 the trend in both violent and property crime rates slightly increased. The increase in crime rate overall is attributed to the population growth rate of 37.41%. The population growth rate is much higher than the state average rate of 18.34% and is much higher than the national average rate of 9.71%."

Since then other towns have passed similar laws, although they aren't enforced.

They don't post there of course. Nobody posts there, not even the bears. But when it's time for hibernation they read one of JTO's or ElMo's posts and doze right off for months.

But they immediately banned all guns and demand every bear agree with their bear survey that says 90% of all bears agree with them.

If they don't agree they get banned from the ice floe.

Not your average bear.

Man Shot Outside Kennesaw Walmart

Kennesaw police are looking for a man they say shot another person in the shoulder during a dispute in the parking lot of the Walmart on Barrett Parkway on Thursday.

A man walking out of the Walmart at approximately 8:30 a.m. may have been startled by another car that pulled up too close to him, FOX 5 Atlanta says. The driver and pedestrian exchanged words. Minutes later, the pedestrian walked up to the car and shot the driver.

I grew up in Kennesaw. This person went out purposefully looking for a subset of the culture and found it. Not everyone who lives there owns a gun. We certainly didn't. In fact, I know lots of people that didn't. This article makes the people of Kennesaw look like a bunch of fun happy rednecks which couldn't be further from the truth. The city is not in the country, it's not a small town, and it's a thriving middle class suburban area.

I've lived in Kennesaw for a few years, and I grew up 15 minutes away from Kennesaw and I've never heard of this law. I don't own a gun. Kennesaw is a suburban college town and to be frank there aren't many rednecks like the people in these photos. The law must not be enforced.

I live in Kennesaw and yes, own a gun, but these pictures are of people like I have never seen here before. I'm not quite sure where he found most of them. This is a rather affluent suburb just north of Atlanta.

This photographer looked long and hard to find these folks! I live in Kennesaw and this is an upper middle class suburban city. Yes, I have a gun -- had it long before I moved here 6 years ago. This photographer had an agenda and succeeded in fulfilling it. You're more likely to run across young affluents driving Lexus' and Lambos than you are the people highlighted here!

Weird that the article didn't mention the two mass shootings we've had in the last five years. Hmm.
