From prison, Cunningham pleads for his gun rights

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/may/26/prison-cunningham-pleads-his-gun-rights/

SAN DIEGO — Just months away from being released from federal prison, former Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham of Rancho Santa Fe wrote to a federal judge earlier this month asking help to get his rights to carry a gun restored.

He wrote he would be in a remote part of the state and “not much threat from people but they do have a lot of black bears, cougars, and a history of rabies.” He asked the judge to act to restore his rights, or at the least, “endorse” Cunningham’s bid to restore them.

But the judge noted that since 1992 Congress has not appropriated funds for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to do the background investigations for felons applying for the waiver.

In the letter, a forlorn sounding Cunningham, now 70, complains he is broke and after he is released to a halfway house will have to live on $1,700 per month. He referred to his decorated military career, too.

One can live pretty good on $1,700 in the remote part of that state. Most likely put in the top 10% of incomes.

but if it was up to me I'd leave him high and dry. He can claim his innocence all he wants, but unless he can back it up with new evidence, he's been convicted of defrauding the American people and stabbing them in the back. Corruption by public officials is one of very few crimes I'd almost like to retain the death penalty for. Some non-violent offenders would have my support on this, but Duke? Let the black bears have him.

All you do is just disparage honest law abiding citizens who chose to CCW.

Just for the record, I have NEVER intimidated anyone with my firearm which, by the way, I do carry every day.

An old fool, perhaps in early stages of dementia, and guns don't mix. If you really don't know why they are a danger, you aren't going to listen to anything I tell you. If we take keys away from folks who are "too old to drive," I think we need to do the same for those with guns.

In any event, I'd really prefer "law-abiding" folks like this stay at home to play with their guns:

if a court says that someone is unfit to have firearms around due to mental state, then by all means, have a relative, friend, whatever, remove them.

You are the one who has shown time and time again that you are the one who won't listen to reason, ignore statistics when posted, disparage, insult other DU'ers by comparing them to Loughner or Zimmerman.

I'm sorry, I just don't get why you are like that. I get that you don't like gun but a least try to be civil about it.

As far as what you prefer, thats your right and it is my right to ignore what you prefer.

See, I can have a conversation without the foul words, you really ought to try it sometime.

BTW, you may think of them as toys, those of us that own and carry them do not.

$1700 per month in California? Where?

I'm guessing that if you were the Sec. of Treas., you would tell him to fuck off. I might too. I would restore John Dean's.

Question, since black powder guns are not legally guns (under federal gun laws because of the lack of fixed cartridge) perhaps he can get a Hawkins replica? Wait, something tells me that he is too "city" for such a thing.
Bears with rabies are very rare. If a mt. lion bites you, rabies won't be your problem. Raccoons and coyotes, different deal.

I think if you've committed a disqualifying act, you lose the right to own firearms. Why? Because the overwhelming majority of people who commit homicide with a firearm have extensive prior criminal records. Knowing this, why would we allow these people to legally keep firearms?

Someone trying to get their rights restored should have their whole criminal record examined by a non partisan panel to determine if they qualify for rights restoration.
Hope that clears it up.
