San Francisco Chronicle columnist CW Nevius writes "When the homeless may not be harmless":But Capt. Greg Corrales at the Park Station reminds us that it isn't always that simple. His officers recently made a chilling discovery when they searched the car of a homeless man in Golden Gate Park.
Robert Johns was on their radar, and when they searched his vehicle they found a sawed-off shotgun, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, 14 knives and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition, police said.
"The camouflage clothing and survivalist gear isn't illegal," said Officer Elizabeth Prillinger. But as she wrote in her report, "the totality of the circumstances ... suggests that Johns may be preparing to engage in some violent act of unknown dimension."
Johns had a few run-ins with officers, beginning on June 30 when he was approached by officers near Alvord Lake. Johns began ranting about being a special government officer and claiming that he "cut his own umbilical cord."
Alarmed, they also asked whether they could search his car, and after he agreed they found a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and a loaded .22 rifle, police said. Given his odd behavior, they impounded the guns and took him to the hospital for a mental evaluation.

Although the weapons were disturbing, officers figured once they had confiscated them they had removed the threat.
Does this say a lot about the law when a guy living out of his car and lacking a driver's license can buy thousands of rounds of ammo? The article further states that the police most recently arrested Johns at...a yoga studio whose owner called 911 because Johns was harassing members.

(17,502 posts)I'm guessing he had the stuff before he became homeless, just like the guns. On the other hand, he had enough drugs on him to be charged with "intent to sell". There is a very good chance he didn't get the ammo at Wal Mart, certainly not in the SF bay area. Can't buy online with cash and without a place to ship to.

(26,602 posts)He is/was homeless, but there's no certainty that all his property was always in the truck; he could have had a storage unit somewhere.
Also, that charge of drug possession for sale suggests some less-than-wholesome connections.
Either way, the ammo isn't the question, it's the second batch of guns. If he acquired them since June 30 it was likely through illegal channels, and finding out how is what matters. And since I don't believe it was legal to have the loaded firearms in the car in the first go-round, it's a failure of law enforcement that he was only taken to the hospital and the guns (informally?) confiscated...
(I also think the officer is leaping to conclusions with that statement about preparing for a violent act - given that we've just had two episodes of serial murder (or attempted murder) against the homeless in CA, and crime against that population is far from rare, it seems more likely that self-defense was a motivation regardless of how unbalanced this man is in general.)
