Mansfield man allegedly pulls gun on salesmen

MANSFIELD — A former Texas man licensed in his native state to carry a concealed weapon got a tough lesson in gun laws in Massachusetts, allegedly after he pulled a handgun on two aggressive door-to-door salesmen.

Charles C. Cook, 51, is free now on $5,000 cash bail following his arraignment Monday in Attleboro District Court. But Cook spent the weekend behind bars after he was arrested Friday at West Village Apartments on West Street.

Police say he confronted two men selling magazines outside his neighbor’s apartment Friday night by pointing a handgun he held in his jacket pocket and telling them to move on.

The men had gone to Cook’s apartment first while he and his fiancé were eating dinner, before Cook told the men he was not interested, according to police.

a woman with two young children, from the two salesmen. He said the salesmen had an “aggressive” sales pitch and did not have permission to be on the property.

(Cook’s lawyer) said Cook never took the gun out of his jacket pocket...He said his client only recently moved to Massachusetts...and has not yet had time to get a Massachusetts gun license.

(Cook’s lawyer) said Cook was about to call about the two men for trespassing when police came to his door...

He never took out his gun, yet someone called the cops on HIM? Who would do such a thing -- a couple of salesmen who'd had a gun pulled on them?

Throw the book at the doofus -- and make him wait at least year to get his new gun permit. He simply should have called the landlord or building management if he thought the salesmen trespassing, and them handle it. And aggressive sales pitches do not equate to a deadly threat.

There have been cases where contractors, salesmen, meter readers etc go door to door as imposters only to be casing a house.
