Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumFrom CREDO: "Reinstate the Federal Assault Weapons Ban"
From a hard-copy of my 9/12 bill (my new computer won't link, or properly structure paragraphs):
"Military-style semiautomatic weapons that take high-capacity clips were outlawed for civilian use under the Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994. In subsequent years, crimes traced to such weapons dropped 66%. Unfortunately that law expired in 2004. It's time to reinstate the ban. About 270 people are shot every day in the U.S., nearly 100,000 each year. In recent mass killings in Wisconsin and Colorado, the shooters used semiautomatic assault weapons. Many things must change to stop the next massacre, but we can start with the common-sense step of banning civilians from buying assault weapons meant for military use."
Many problems with this statement:
(1) Nothing in the "ban" banned anything except 10+ round capacity;
(2) No figures for their "66%" drop, or for the number of "subsequent years;"
(3) The figures of 270 "shot every day" and "100,000 each year" have little bearing on this proposed ban;
(4) "Many things must change...but we can start" suggests yet another long-range, incremental slog toward general prohibition;
(5) "...weapons meant for military use" is demonstrably wrong: All armies now use FULL-AUTO. Semi-auto-only is now obsolete.
I have my data plan with CREDO, and I support there overall social goals. But they must learn that there is nothing progressive about gun control, and I so informed them. Again.

(60,567 posts)...where did that "66%" drop figure come from? FBI crime statistics have only broken down firearms into pistols and revolvers, rifles, shotguns, and a generic "other" which includes machineguns and other unconventional weapons.
This smells like bullshit.

(881 posts)We changed from full auto to 3 round burst on the M16(M4). Things like the SAW still use full auto but not the main rifle.

(2,038 posts)M4A1's are SAFE/SEMI/AUTO, M4's and M16A2/A4's are SAFE/SEMI/BURST, M16A3's share M4A1 trigger groups. Supposedly the Army is going to the M4A1 across the board.
