Mayors oppose dangerous gun bill

Law enforcement leaders and eight Michigan mayors today came out in strong opposition to HB 5225, a bill that would eliminate background checks for private-party handgun sales, which comprise nearly half of all handgun sales in Michigan.

"This bill would make it easier for convicted criminals and persons with severe mental illness to obtain deadly weapons and make it more difficult for our police officers to protect themselves and our communities," the mayors wrote in a letter to state Senate leaders and Governor Rick Snyder.

HB 5225 has already passed the state House of Representatives, and it cleared a Senate committee vote earlier this month. A full Senate vote is expected as early as next week.

-- snip --

HB 5225 is also strongly opposed by the Michigan State Police, the Michigan Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention and Treatment Board and the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence.

Aside from the fact that this statement was issued by the Michigan division of the felon-ridden Mayors Against Illegal Guns, there was one particular howler from the mayor of Detroit about 2/3rds of the way down the page. I leave it to the observer to figure out what's wrong with the following:

"During my administration, four Detroit police officers were shot by perpetrators using a shotgun that was legally sold without a background check. It is unfortunate that our legislature is now trying to eliminate background checks for half of all handgun sales," said Detroit Mayor Bing. "We need all elected officials to stand up for public safety and make it tougher for illegal guns to infiltrate our community."

Don't try to take away the lifeline of the Delicate Flowers. Any kind of gun regulations impinges on their vital need to be armed with guns, preferably more than one or better yet an arsenal, to brave the dangerous world that lies outside their "Fortress Of Solitude"

If by "steamrolled" you mean "Delicate Flowers posting lie-filled posts about the glory of guns 24x7 as if they were paid by the NRA", I agree with you.

You're talking about the millions given by ALEC and other right-wing groups to the NRA and other causes to further gun deregulation.

Yes, the right-wing has billions to throw at their pet causes. Interesting you believe that money=being right.

Just keep telling yourself that your billionaire idols care about you.

The fact is that the NRA has only 4.3 million members out of the 80 million gun owners in our nation.

Please explain to me why the Brady Campaign has perhaps 1/10th the number of members that the NRA does if stronger gun control such as another assault weapons ban or national registration of firearms is very popular with most citizens.

The fact is that most citizens in our nation see no serious problem with honest and responsible citizens owning and even carrying firearms.

If you disagree please explain this map that shows the spread of right to carry laws across our nation.

Some form of Right to Carry laws passed in all states with the exception of Illinois despite all the efforts of the Brady Campaign and the news media to discourage the passage of these laws. "Shall Issue" concealed carry is the most popular.

The simple fact is that our nation has a very strong gun culture and that is unlikely to change in the near future. The blame for the failure of the gun control movement is often blamed on the NRA but the true strength of the RKBA movement lies with the 80 million gun owners and members of their families who show up at the polls to vote against any politician that they perceive as a significant threat to gun rights .

Therefore it and other recent rulings do little to explain the map I presented in my previous post which showed the spread of Right to Carry laws across our nation since 1986.

I will also challenge you to explain why the support for gun control has dropped dramatically as shown by these graphs.

Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: bongbong has a point. More guns do not = less crime. So the other poster was lying. Calling a lie a lie is what DUers do. I don't think calling someone that lies a liar is over-the-top. In fact we should it more on DU, it should be mandatory to call these lying scumbag gun jerkwad out of the lies they tell. I feel sorry who are so afraid that they need to cling to their guns . They must have suffered some trauma when they were younger leading to their paranoia in the world.

Probably one of the DBs running to Meta with this crap.
