Here in Southeast Missouri, I really want to scream

On Thursday I took the kids to the beauty salon for haircuts. One of the beauticians was telling her client in a very loud voice that she just got a new gun. Like a new pair of shoes or the latest whatever, she "couldn't wait to use it" and hoped that "someone would try to steal change from her car." My first thought was this person has no business with a gun. My second was who do I report this to so she doesn't harm someone?

We all know about what happened on Friday.

The seven flags in front of the Gun and Pawn store are at full mast. An adult novelty, video and book store is also housed in the building, so the property isn't really about kids or anything. I think it is pretty low. They were not lowered all weekend. They are at full mast today.

My faith in humanity and my community is pretty low right now, not that it was that high to begin with.

I'm tired of shaking my head, lowering my eyes and shutting my mouth.

The right to own a gun is not paramount to the rights of others for a fair trial. Liberty is not a license to kill. Freedom of speech, like refusing to lower your flags in reverence to victims of violence or announcing your crazy intentions to shoot someone, anyone is just really stupid.

Thanks, just had to express this somewhere.

I spend most of my time with a couple of American friends biting my tongue. It just.....leaves me speechless. I swear that my eyebrows are going to find a permanent home in my hairline.

and again the next day after Newton. I even compared owning a gun to the 'precious' in the LOTR and Hobbit if a person doesn't respect the lives of others they become twisted inside.

It was hard to drop them off at school today.

I have people I've known for years that no longer speak to me because they have no respect for the President nor anything that he has done to help our country.

I don't miss these people, they make me sick to be honest with you.

However, in your case, it isn't so easy to just pack it in and leave I'm sure.

You have my condolences, believe me!

I think there are laws out there about failing to honor an Executive Order like the one that was placed by Pres. Obama to have flags flown at half mast.

Shame on these SOB's and just be glad that you aren't one of them, I suppose that is about all I can say without going off the deep end myself.

I just found this:

>> And here’s the federal law on the subject, 4 USC 7 (m):

(m) The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law. In the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from any State, territory, or possession who dies while serving on active duty, the Governor of that State, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half-staff, and the same authority is provided to the Mayor of the District of Columbia with respect to present or former officials of the District of Columbia and members of the Armed Forces from the District of Columbia. When the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, or the Mayor of the District of Columbia, issues a proclamation under the preceding sentence that the National flag be flown at half-staff in that State, territory, or possession or in the District of Columbia because of the death of a member of the Armed Forces, the National flag flown at any Federal installation or facility in the area covered by that proclamation shall be flown at half-staff consistent with that proclamation. The flag shall be flown at half-staff 30 days from the death of the President or a former President; 10 days from the day of death of the Vice President, the Chief Justice or a retired Chief Justice of the United States, or the Speaker of the House of Representatives; from the day of death until interment of an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a Secretary of an executive or military department, a former Vice President, or the Governor of a State, territory, or possession; and on the day of death and the following day for a Member of Congress. The flag shall be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day, unless that day is also Armed Forces Day.

If all the above terms only apply to federal facilities, then that would mean that no other public buildings would ever have to fly the flag at half-staff.

I guess the 27 people that were murdered in cold blood are not important enough according to the above information.

Our local courthouse has the flag flying at half-staff. Some local businesses and the schools are at half staff. Under that statute it appears that maybe they don't have to, but rather chose to.

I took the gun/pawn private business lack of reverence as an expression of free speech. They have lowered their flags for other reasons, but not for the 27 murdered.

Here on my AF base, the message didn't come out, via email, until after 1600 (4pm). Since we just concluded a long and tiring exercise, lots of folks had already gone home and I don't recall seeing anything on TV news about it all weekend. But I was busy out of the house most of the weekend too....

Heck, the flag on my garage is fixed-position, it's not set up do half-staff at all.
