Young blacks more open to Bernie Sanders' White House bid

ORANGEBURG, S.C. | BY EMILY STEPHENSON

If Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders has a chance of drawing African-American voters away from rival Hillary Clinton in South Carolina's presidential nominating contest on Feb. 27, his best opportunity will be among the young.

African Americans support former Secretary of State Clinton by more than a 3-to-1 margin nationwide, but among young blacks 18 to 29 years old, that margin shrinks to 46 percent for Clinton versus 33 percent for Sanders, according to recent Reuters/Ipsos polling.

African Americans overwhelmingly back Democrats, but opinion polls show younger blacks more apt to reject an establishment candidate. They seem less inclined than their parents to reward Clinton for the outreach of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and more drawn to Sanders’ outspoken views on reducing income inequality, cracking down on Wall Street, and cutting the cost of college.

Reuters/Ipsos polling last year showed that 36 percent of blacks between 18 and 29 years old thought the country was on the “wrong track,” compared with 23 percent of blacks who were at least 60 years old.

I am hoping that the young will influence their parents, as Ta-Nehisi's son did. thereismore Feb 2016 #1

Eventually, even Rep. Lewis will switch after Georgia rejects Hillary (again).

I don't think her supporters will switch until General Election. IF he is the nominee.

Then again - many of us are reminding the youths in our families - he waits until NOW when your family member was referred to as NIH on a police report in 1991. Now all of a sudden when he was in Congress when I was in high school (25 years ago) - these issues are important?

We also remind them that whichever one wins has to wait until 2023 when hopefully we can have a House that will be amenable to all of these plans. At that point my younger nephew will have graduated from Rutgers, finished his solar certification and be a small business owner with my husband as a silent partner and mentor - so making bank.

It's best the young black man in that situation be aware that his profits will be severely taxed under Sanders plan.

Can we talk about a 34 year delay on raising the taxes of black Americans to make up for the shaft we got with FDR's Raw Deal? Or are we only focused on 20 years ago - even though 20 year ago we were dealing with the same problems we have now -

Inner city ghettos deliberately crafted by the Democratic Party Leadership (FDR). Great War President, good for white people - but awful to black and Japanese people. He's no fucking Saint. Neither are Clinton or Sanders.

Is that taboo in the African American Group or do we have to stick to sunshine and lollipops back here too?

You invaded - now del with the response from a Group Host.

I try to understand. I think your reaction is a bit too strong. Please see this post before you alert the Group Host. I think you might understand that I am not trying to be antagonistic:

But it remains as is.

What you perceive as "too strong" is an honest and terse response to.

I am group host.
