Here is a good article summarizing the non-sensical voter ID issues in WI
'In Tuesdays primary election, Wisconsin saw its highest voter turnout in decades, leading Gov. Scott Walker (R) to boast that its easy to vote in his state. But many voters were burdened or disenfranchised by the states newly-implemented and poorly publicized voter ID law, which disproportionately impacts the states low-income voters of color.
....
Sean Young, the lead attorney on the case, previously argued that Wisconsins voter ID law should be struck down entirely. Some federal courts agreed, comparing the law to a poll tax, but the U.S. Supreme Court allowed the law to stand. Now, the ACLU is arguing that individual categories of people should be allowed to challenge the law and demand accommodations that enable them to vote.
...
.... We havent had the right to vote depend on the whims of an individual bureaucrat since the days of the Jim Crow literacy test.

(31,879 posts)I'm sick to death of accusations about Democratics trying to prevent people from voting. The Republicans own this - they did this.
La Lioness Priyanka
(53,866 posts)so why would she even want to disenfranchise her base?
on many levels this accusation is wrong, morally, factually, pragmatically. etc.

(5,279 posts)But, the problem still exists. It hampers voting by people who need a voice in government the most. In November those same people will be rendered voiceless again.

(53,866 posts)but, it seemed to me that the outrage that followed Arizona was completely absent about Wisconsin.
I could def be wrong. -

(5,279 posts)Locally, there was a lot of talk about ID's and stories of people being dropped from voter rolls. "myvote.wi.gov" state run registration info site) crashed three times in two days due to heavy traffic.
On DU and from the Sanders campaign ground teams; we were urged to keep checking our status and be on the look out for voting...irregularities. How to document them and where to report them. Local media also mentioned this but much more sparingly.
We have an open primary, so Indies can vote for R or D as they want. No drops of recent Democrats.
We didn't have the mass closing of polling places like in AZ. We did have polling places moved from closed governmental buildings to other locations (mine when from a closed Elementary school to a church).
Due to a couple of effective lawsuits, ID for voting is free. If you can get to the DMV with proper proof. Wanker closed or cut back hours of DMV offices across the state to "save money", but that was months ago, and we have adapted.
I think part of the reason the similar voting countermeasures in both WI and AZ had such dissimilar results is due to the massive backlash in AZ. People were prepared for it, so it was throttled back.

There hasn't been any concern over Wisconsin.
Just like complaints over the caucus system after iowa but none after many others.

i hate that something like this is made into a HRC vs Bernie issue, because this is so much bigger than those two.

I've harped on it back here - but other than this group - it's kind of fallen on deaf ears.

(12,228 posts)The salient issue, and suppressing black voters led and continued down the years to lead that salient, was just protecting the vote. From Bill Clinton and our awesome Senate to the unplanned run-ins with Theft 2016 structures, little has been even said and nothing done. They even gutted the VRA and campaign finance reform with barely a ripple in the party organization. The people being arrested now came from a populist movement to change Citizens United long before Bernie announced. Maybe Anonymous did something with the 2012 voting machines. certainly no professional Democrat did much of anything. What exactly is that profession anyway if it isn't about securing votes in all senses of the word?
No the theme this year was not even to have Dems at the polls at all and when surprisingly we have a contest outside the script, the point is moot that the real problems exposed are mostly due to rubbing up against strong voter suppression tactics cemented in by GOP crooks. And it's so damn obvious that unless the public can do anything about that themselves nothing will change at all. Of course no one talks about the voting machines and the man in the middle adjustment of the tallies, etc.
Which is why the "wise" script calls for an unopposed coronation and a Fall blowout and an obliging GOP poltroon candidate. A script written in erasable pencil it seems. Kerry and Obama and others were asked about the crooked giveaway of a margin or two to the GOP.
The kindergarten response: We are going to win very very big! If that was the case maybe they better make sure the candidate actually motivates that human wave of partially counted citizens and maybe try just a little bit to maybe make it a bit of an issue about our right to vote and maybe what treason actually means?

(314 posts)amount of anger directed towards the law here in Wisconsin. My understanding is that the Wisconsin law is particularly draconian, which doesn't surprise me given that Walker and his minions are particularly slimy even by Republican standards, and what they lack in brains they make up for in their unquenchable thirst for power. Everything they do is done with the goal of trampling on those whom they see as political enemies or rigging the system in their favor (granted, that's the GOP's whole shtick...but Wisconsin Republicans are so arrogant and transparent in the way that they go about it that it's really kind of breathtaking). I'm so glad the rest of America saw through Walker's bullshit so that he's not going to be allowed to fuck up the entire country the way he did my beautiful home state. The guy's every bit as reactionary and insane as the Trumps and Cruzes of the world--he's just a whole lot dumber.
