a minor rant: I'm really tired of reading posts arguing against white privilege

As most of you know, I'm a middle aged white guy. I've grown up in the South. Holy shit, if you deny white privilege, you are either 1) being willfully obtuse, either paid or unpaid; or 2) you have never ever met a person of color in your entire life or ever read or heard of their difficulties in this country. I think option #1 is the case in 99.99999999999999999% of cases.

If I'm THIS sick of reading those posts, I can just imagine how AA posters feel.

eta: I'm awaiting the deniers to arrive in CreekDog's thread any minute.

And i've grown up darn near everywhere in the nation. The south isn't special on this account. seen it against natives and Filipinos in aAlaska, against Hispanics in LA and Washington, against Vietnamese in Florida, Koreans in Atlanta, the whole throng.

I am white as well and live in the south. I grew up in France (american mother, french father). It is shocking how many older or middle aged white people will make overtly racist or disparaging remarks when they think you will agree with them and only white people are in the room. I could not believe it at first.

The only positive thing is that I do not see this behavior amongst younger people very often.

I knew that's what he was referring to, but I lack expertise in that area. I'm glad you stepped in.

The fact that white privilege exists seems crystal clear to me, so clear that I don't understand how anyone could deny it. My white skin gives me an advantage over people of color and has every day of my life. I am not viewed with suspicion, not ever. If the police stop me, for speeding, for instance, as they have a couple of times, they call me ma'am. Then half the time, they give me a warning. If I apply for a job, I'm more likely to be hired. Probably, if I walked around, waving an assault rifle, the cops would try to talk me down rather than pause 5 seconds and shoot me down and leave me like a dog in the street.

I've walked around, alone, at night, and police always ignore me. I've never been stopped and questioned. I do think if I was black, I would have been stopped at least once, if not many times.

And those who try to fight and say it is class and not race are even more obtuse.

i grew up in a country where blacks could only buy homes in certain areas. in a country where white people would ALL move when a black people moved into a neighborhood. i grew up in a country where the murder of black people by police is routine and expected...the norm. i grew up in a country where official segregation lasted for over 100 years, and slavery existed for over 400 years, yet affirmative action barely made it 30 or 40 years. i grew up in a country where black men carrying guns (the panthers) was considered a national crisis that warranted the attention of the FBI and CIA, but where white men can open carry with impunity. i grew up in a country where a bomb was dropped on black radicals in Philadelphia, and where white politicians openly flirt with white supremacist groups. willful ignorance, and an intentional choice to be a part of the problem.
