The KKK, LEO message boards, gun nutter message boards, the media, the FBI, the governor, the list goes on...All have been in the national media this past week predicting in no uncertain terms a Nat Turneresque uprising, if not an armed rebellion in place of the mere "riot" (so it's only natural that they need to arm themselves to the teeth and "monitor" our situation lest things get too much out of hand)...You know who rarely gets interviewed anymore? The black folks who actually live in Ferguson...

Is there any doubt that fear of black folks and what we may or may not do has completely overridden any sane discussion of the case? Because right now the cops and patriotic white gunners are so primed, I can easily see them opening fire on a crowd of us the second somebody drops their car keys or reaches for their cellphone...

Are all these messages in the media supposed to discourage black folks to protest lest we get caught up in a massacre??

Back in my young'in days, my parents frequently gave me directives ... they did not have to state "or else" because I knew what the consequences of not doing so, were. Apparently, in some quarters, there is a wide belief that the lessons of jim crow have to be re-taught.

This should help you to understand what our parents (African Americans at DU in our 30's and older) experienced as children in the Jim Crow Regime. Jim Crow was the regime used by white people to inflict pain and misery on black Americans prior to the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts.





You should have learned about the March from Selma in school. Someone thought it wasn't necessary - that we were 'post racial' and equality was a reality.

I've been working on a novel for the past 8 months - and it's set during the time of the great flood. A black man was shot by the police for refusing to work without pay - during the time they pretty much enslaved the blacks of Mississippi to put their lives in danger 'stopping the flood' - for wealthy white planters.

In this town meeting - the officials blamed it on him. For wanting the respect and dignity every man/woman wants when he/she puts in a hard days work.

Some keyboard warriors who wanted to see blood in the streets as a sign of their revolution finally coming to pass, will be asking what is wrong with the black people if they don't put on a show they can watch from a distance.

Damn few care about them, not really, except as menu items. They need to do something disruptive, but that won't get people shot. Put that on a sign... "We are coming after you - to buy your business!."

It's a problem throughout the country, and this focus on Ferguson keeps us from having the larger conversation, I think.
