"Thats a Clown question, Bro"

Bryce Harper hit his seventh homer of the season last night, and it was a doozy. .

It was listed at 438 feet, but it was way high when it hit that sign next to the restaurant level and would have had a lot more distance in it if it had been able to fly free. All the more impressive: he had to reach out a little to get to that breaking ball, which could have sapped some of his power.

And the legend grows. And if the homer wasn’t enough to make the legend grow, his response to a reporter’s question did.

He was asked after the game if — because it’s legal for 19 year-olds to drink in Canada — he was going to go get a celebratory beer. His response: ”That’s a clown question, bro.”

Best response to a dumb question EVER! I really love Harper. Not only is he a great baseball player but he's pretty funny sometimes.

Two: he's a Mormon so it IS offensive to ask, I try to respect others beliefs, silly liberal that I am.
Three: I tweet with his sister and like me she said Harp does not suffer fools gladly. As I am the same way I have much respect for him
Four: If you watch the video, he doesn't really say it in a jerky tone. Its much funnier in print.
But whatever. I guess you buy the "Harper is a jerk" meme.

Why would that be a problem to ask? It isn't illegal. When I was in Ft. Lewis, numerous people would make trips to Vancouver just for the purpose of drinking. Army never carried US drinking law onto service-members stationed in Germany. If people care that he isn't following US law in Canada then that is there problem though I doubt most would care. Even then why can't the reporter ask the question?

With two, does the reporter know he is a Mormon? I didn't until this thread but didn't surprise me considering he is from Las Vegas. Even if he knew he was a Mormon, he may not be aware of all the beliefs and practices. Also not all Mormons follow them, I recall working w/ a Mormon who drank coffee every single morning. If the reporter knew he was Mormon & that he couldn't alcohol I could maybe see offensiveness but at the same time I have a hard time respecting when I live in a city w/ many LDS members in city government that refuse to allow buses to run on Sunday & other things where they use faith to drive police. Like Russell Pearce citing Mormon's 13 Article of Faith to justify SB 1070. Not to mentioning the campaigning they do against marriage equality here & elsewhere.

I don't know if Haper is a jerk or not but did think it was a fun & harmless question. That said, knowing that he is Mormon I'm curious to how he feels about gay marriage or gay people in general considering it is clearly against the Laws of chastity.

when you are underage in your home town, even if its legal there. How do you think the press would react if a player went to Amsterdam and admitted smoking marijuana while there? Wouldn't be pretty.
If you are a reporter and you want to be a good professional you do some basic research on players before you actually talk to them so you don't look stupid. Its well known around here that he's a Mormon. Asking that is like asking a Muslim if he wants a ham sandwich. He'd be destroyed for that too.
As for Harper's political beliefs, I don't think they are relevant. I grew up with several Mormon family friends and never once talked politics and we got along great.
I would put the beer question in the same category as "what kind of a tree would you be". Stupid fluff.

I still imagine it would be treated significantly different than if a player used cannabis. Not that there is logic behind it but alcohol use is ingrained in America culture far more than cannabis is. The number of people that drank before they turned 21 probably far exceeds the total that tried cannabis. As I said, in the Army, nobody gave someone shit whenever they talking about their experiences drinking under 21 in either Canada or Germany. Probably 'cause a significant number of under 21 drink in the US.

I see the point but it was actually my experience founding out that Muslim practice that led me to say the reporter probably didn't know. I remember a Muslim was taking me to do something I forget, we stop at the Pizza Hut and tells me to order anything. I say can I have the pepporoni. He told me "Normally I wouldn't, but in this case I'll do it." Which led to a conversation on why he doesn't approve of pepperoni .

Harper's political beliefs aren't relevant. I'm just speaking out loud for myself on whether I should like him or not.

I live in Mesa which was founded by Mormons and has a very large Mormon population so I have gotten along with a few. The thing about asking if one of them drinks being offensive interested me because all the time there's missionaries on bikes asking me if I want to be a Mormon, "Where do you live?", "Why not(be a Mormon)?", and "Do you have any neighbors that might be interested in being a Mormon?" but it's offensive to ask one of they drink? If I didn't grew up in the area I could understand the offensiveness point but they let you know their beliefs all the time including the policies that are set.

21. Dustin Pedroia Looks to 'Blow Up' Reporter Who Led Bryce Harper to Respond...
Tue Jun 19, 2012, 09:25 AM
Jun 2012
Dustin Pedroia has never been afraid to say what's on his mind, and if he gets a chance to talk to a certain reporter in the future, that's exactly what he's going to do. According to ESPN.com, the Red Sox second baseman knows which reporter asked Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper about whether or not the 19-year-old was going to have a celebratory beer following a game earlier this week. That question led Harper to respond with the now famous words, "That's a clown question, bro." The question apparently also got under Pedroia's skin, and he's looking forward to the next time he sees the reporter, where he sounds like he's going to give him a piece of his mind. Pedroia said he's going to "blow him up" the next time he sees the reporter, according to ESPN.com. "Poor kid," Pedroia said of Harper. "I would have said, (Expletive) you, I'm 19."
