Baseball Writers Association of America elects first woman president
San Francisco Chronicle / 12-28-12
DETROIT - (San Francisco) Chronicle staff writer Susan Slusser was elected president of the Baseball Writers Association of America on Saturday afternoon at the annual World Series meeting of the BBWAA.
Slusser, who has covered baseball for more than two decades, including 14 years on the Oakland A's beat, is the first woman to lead the 104-year-old organization.
"I'm proud and honored because this is an organization I care deeply about," Slusser said. "I don't like thinking of myself as a woman reporter, rather just as a reporter. I'm thrilled to lead this organization."
The BBWAA, which has more than 700 members, is the professional organization for baseball journalists. As president, Slusser will deal with issues of access, membership and committees. The BBWAA votes on postseason awards, such as Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, Manager of the Year and MVP for both leagues. Next month, the announcement of those awards will be televised on MLB network for the first time ever.
