(34,111 posts)I will be watching every chance I get.
Got to see Radwanska this AM. Now I have to go out and work for a while but thankfully have a schedule that will allow me to catch a lot of the next two weeks (fingers crossed it stays that way ).
Need to go check the draws, have been removed almost completely since Wimbledon but I do know that Rafa is not here.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Roger isn't playing today, so I will watch, but not that closely...tomorrow I really will pay attention!
MuseRider
(34,111 posts)and while I still don't really care about him I love Amelie Mauresmo and want to see her gain some real success so she will be around a lot. So all in all my heart lies with Federer, next Ferrer (although I know what a really long shot that is) then I guess it would be Murray (all for Amelie). Djoker I don't dislike really. I do NOT care for Raonic, not his game and so far not the man. Oops, I forgot Warinka! Stick him up after Ferrer
Women I like Radwanska, would love to see her finally break all the way through. Otherwise there are a bunch I am not sure of but love to watch so hopefully those will start to arrange themselves in my head soon. I still love Venus She is fun and kind and a good sport and has a really fun game to watch when she is not sucking.
I don't mind not having a favorite, still love the sport, but I do get a kick out of sitting here like a big old dork with my Federer hat on. My second Federer hat. The first one suffered at the hands of a puppy and was not perfect so I had to get another.

Good draw for Roger
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)and you have to wait all day for it! they do it because he's such a big draw, though.
TBF
(32,062 posts)I am usually too tired to watch. I tend to not watch the first few days anyway while they are eliminating half the field. By the weekend I'll pay attention
I'v never heard of the guy he's playing.

(32,062 posts)don't they both have the same sponsor?

joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Neither Venus or Kim are going anywhere this tournament, would have liked to see a 44-year-old win a match.
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)But was rooting for Venus.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)She's still decent, but with her age she can't really get far in any tournament.
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)But, yea, she has limitations.

(72,790 posts)American teenager CC Bellis knocks off Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulková in three sets.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I'd never heard of her.
Unfortunately there's all these young American women who do well and we get our hopes up, then they fizzle out.
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)Some junior tournament or something.
She advanced to French Open juniors championship in doubles earlier this year, I believe.
And I think it's CiCi not CC. My bad.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I hope she's the real deal and doesn't disappoint after this...
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)Seriously, I hope she can have consistent results. American tennis is in bad shape.

Raswanka lost..I thought she might finally go far, Sloane lost also...she's hopeless.
Minor upset on the men's side as Feliciano Lopez lost.
Edit, now I see a score that Lopez won because Dodig retired...I could have sworn I saw Dodig had won.

TBF
(32,062 posts)of Marat Safin. She's very athletic but has to be stronger mentally. I think she's got a heck of a lot of potential. Also liked the 15-yr old American I saw playing for a bit last night. Blue dress, pink shoes - cannot remember the name. She was losing in the 3rd but to get to the second round was good.

(77,081 posts)The men are especially sad, and there doesn't seem to be much on the horizon.
MuseRider
(34,111 posts)We keep getting all these new young women but so far nobody has really been able to step up. The men I have given up on. For now that is. It will cycle back one hopes. We were pretty dominant for quite a while.
There are a lot of newer players from elsewhere that are particularly fun to watch for now anyway.

He's quite the stud.

(34,111 posts)I don't remember him saying anything. I remember the others. I hate to watch Tsonga now and there have been others for sure and they even let that creep Gimelstob commentate and he was the worst...well maybe McEnroe could give him a run for his money but JG actually said he wanted to hit Anna Kournikova with a tennis ball among other really awful things (he thought his brother should nail her). I don't remember anything from Monfils....please tell me he didn't
YAY Federer! He is looking great!
Good Lord I wish someone would take down Wozniacki. Blech...the little darling of all the commentators. Sadly she has really upped her game, guess I will just have to put up with her being around.
Men's tennis is a lot more fun than I expected it to be this Open. I am enjoying it anyway.
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)Funny, too.
Loved her comments about Vika after the match last night. Hysterical.
MuseRider
(34,111 posts)when she played up all that little cute girl crap they were feeding her and then said the stuff about being kicked by a kangaroo and bitten by a Koala or whatever that was. Good lord what a baby. I have little use for that stuff and do not trust someone who would say something like that then have to say it was a lie. *and I do NOT care that she was young, she was playing in a slam and should have known better than to pull that crap long before she got to that point
She does look good, playing very well and I have no doubt there is a slam in her future as long as she keeps away from the vultures who want to make her into a sweet little thing. I can be moved from this position but for now....ick. Her game looks good though, I give her that and a kudos for working so hard to get where she is.

(56,177 posts)Djoker concerns me...if Roger gets to the final against anyone else, I will be very happy.
MuseRider
(34,111 posts)Very exciting to watch him. Did you hear his comments last night about continuing? It sounded very much like before. He loves the game, loves to play and intends to play until he plays poorly because of age or his body gives out.
Made me happy
Djoker is a problem and I am not sure Murray can take care of it tonight.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Those two matches could tire him out...I hope!
TBF
(32,062 posts)but crazy Monfils has beat Rog a couple times so I'm not counting my chicks before they're hatched ...
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)So it'll be a tough quarter....
That would be good, Stan is doing well and right now it does look like he might be the next but it is still very very early in the match.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I saw the highlights of Kei v Raonic, and I dfon't know if Milos is really that tall or what, but Kei looked very shor in comparison.
MuseRider
(34,111 posts)but was very pleased and surprised to see that Kei got through that one. He is having a really good run. I want Stan to stop it but he still is playing very well at the Open.
Someone had better wear Djoker out because I suspect that Monfils will give Federer a little bit more of a run than he has had so far. That should be a good match.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I do think Kei is the real thing, if he wins, I hope he beats Murray or Djoker.

Surely they are doing blood tests on Cilic, surely. After being suspended they would not dare let that get by would they? Oh yes, he said it was a mistake and they bought it. Maybe it was but damn, they should keep up with that shit.

(34,111 posts)God lord. It was all over then it wasn't, then it looked like it was then it didn't. On to the semis.
BTW, did anyone see Monfils drinking a soda during one of the turn overs? I heard McEnroe talking about that then I looked up and he had a can of something that looked like a Coke. Is he totally nuts? LOL!
TBF
(32,062 posts)picked the wrong game.
Our champ comes through -
and I think for the first time last night I realized how much I am going to miss him when he retires.
His attitude, his demeanor, his love of the sport and sense of the game is not something as easily visible in other players. I don't know, it just makes me attached more to him and his outcome. I felt that way about Agassi but mainly because of watching him change as a person during all his time on the court and his school that he set up. So in addition to the beauty of their game play they shine through as humans.
I love to watch the others. I find Monfils a blast to watch. I adored Justine Henin, her game was like Feds, like ballet almost. I would adore seeing Venus win another Wimbledon, she seems such a gracious person and her excitement always makes me smile. I had slowly come to really respect the oddity that was Marion Bartoli and cheered like mad when she won only to see her retire . Still, no one seems to even come close to my attachment to the Fed Express.
I find it odd because mostly I find professional sports to be tedious and stupid. It is probably the individual nature of this sport that really connects you with that singular person, I don't know. Like boxing. I DO strangely like that sport too but won't watch it ever again.
Anyway, sorry about the rambling. GO FED EXPRESS!
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)There are players that i like and wouldn't mind seeing win, but there's no one out there whose career I follow and whose losses kill me like Fed's...I really liked Stefan, but it's not the same...the only other player whose career I really, really followed was Chris Evert's, and then it was a long time between finding someone I really liked.
The good news? We get to see him play at least one more match this US Open
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I had given up...was ignoring the scores, and then CBS Morning News showed it and I caught it by accident, thankfully.

joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Because I was worried Djoker would beat Roger, but Roger could beat Kei...congrats to him, he's finally arrived...and now I'm thinking that I know I'm jinxing Roger...he still has to beat Marin!
TBF
(32,062 posts)and that's about all I've got that's positive.
At this rate we're going to have 2 newbies in the Final. I'm going with Kai - I'm not a big fan of the huge servers.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I doubt he can pull it out twice in a row.
MuseRider
(34,111 posts)I do NOT like this. Not fond of Cilic, don't really dislike him except that he blamed his doping on his poor mother.
I like what Mary Carillo just said. When you get someone who is a big hitter they take all your game craft away. Too bad. I don't see this getting turned around.

(72,790 posts)I love Hingis and Pennetta, but Makarova and Vessina played really well in the second set. Makarova is going to be a force in singles for years to come, imo. She has a big game, and her serve is such a weapon, as is her being a lefty.
