I had my resident computer whiz kid fill the old Apple® white brick iPod with every Beatles recording that ever made it to vinyl, then he topped it off with surf music; my first road song device and it's like a Timex®, "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking".

Arizona? Hmm, perhaps I should throw Route 66 into the mix. Nat King Cole or the Rolling Stones? Tough

Now you go through Saint Looey
Joplin, Missouri,
And Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino.

But I'll take baseball until the fall.

it should be a very interesting season. With all the prospects the Cubs have and the solid additions the White Sox have made things are looking up on both sides of town. The Red Sox made a big splash signing Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez and acquired much needed pitching through trades. I'm probably more excited about this year than I have been in a while. Baseball has always been the light at the end of the long winter tunnel and the light is getting brighter. Can't wait.

with the Warriors soon moving back across the Bay, I can't say that I have a dog in the fight anymore like how I do with baseball. They're the San Francisco Warriors in my book. With hockey, I pretty much only watch when I'm bored and desperate for something on TV.
I can't wait to see if Bob Melvin et al. are truly reloading like they said at the 2015 fanfest, or if they're just blowing smoke. The AL West is more than likely going to be tough considering that the Angels came out of nowhere and won it last year with the Mariners being in the picture, the Rangers will be fresh again, and even the Astros appear to be coming up and no longer get blown out of games.

15. I keep hearing how loaded A's co-owner John Fisher is ...

Feb 2015

and that since the team rakes in pretty good money through broadcasting, owner Lew Wolff's cries of poverty are not quite the case.

Still, I can understand not breaking the bank on free agents. But it comes at a risk. What Bruce Jenkins writes from September of last year is even more spot-on after the off-season:

This type of revolving-door thinking can play hell with the fan base. For those aware that the A’s make a ton of money, and have an obscenely wealthy co-owner in John Fisher, the endless transition is inexcusable. But there are matters of the heart, as well.

In the wake of the Céspedes trade, Berkeley resident Walt Cecka wrote in an e-mail, “My two middle-school girls have grown up as A’s fans these last three years, and all of a sudden, the buzz is gone. All of their Oakland-born and raised friends feel the same way. Not only did they lose the player that brought the cool and the buzz, but they lost faith in the family aspect of a team. The next generation of A’s fans doesn’t care about OPS, or WAR, or name your sabermetric.”

A longtime Oakland resident, Gail Erb, wrote, “I never get too attached to any A’s player, because I know what’s going to happen. I don’t feel so tentative about becoming attached to Buster Posey or Madison Bumgarner or Joe Panik. Chances are good I’ll be seeing them in black and orange. I just really enjoy rooting for specific players and watching them develop — or self-destruct — over the arc of their careers.” Those are words ownership needs to hear ...

Beane has been remarkably lucky to reload on what seems to be a whim, season after season. As Jenkins concludes:

... but the standings in recent years speak volumes about the Beane-Melvin partnership. And don’t forget that the heart of the A’s fan base is as loyal and passionate as anything the Warriors have experienced over the decades. When the A’s landed in Oakland after being swept by the Angels in Anaheim last month, they were greeted by hundreds of green-and-gold-clad fans in a “welcome home” mood outside the terminal gate — and a lot of those people go back to 1968, the days of Danny Cater and Chuck Dobson, when the team arrived from Kansas City.

If they win, all will be forgotten I guess.

So now I know that their owners are kind of cheapskates rather than broke. After reading that, I don't get exactly what the management is trying to do with the team anymore. Like it said, it's like a revolving door.

1). Wolff and Fisher have been spoiled by Beane, I think. And they're extraordinarily lucky he's hasn't jumped ship yet.

2). Oakland sports fans are among the best in the world. They've stuck with the A's, Raiders and Warriors through some really hard times.
