https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/abby-wambach-again-calls-out-use-of-dual-nationals-for-usa-170919177.htmlIn an interview with the New York Times, the retired United States womens national team star who holds the world record for international goals for either gender once again questioned whether mens national team players who werent born or raised in the U.S. would play as hard as more indigenous players.
After making a similar point in an interview with Bill Simmons on his podcast back in December, Wambach said in Tuesdays Times that It feels a little bit odd to me that you have some guys that have never lived in the United States that play for the United States because they were able to secure a passport.
To me, that just feels like they werent able to make it for their country and earn a living, so theyre coming here, she continued. But do they have that killer instinct? I dont know. Id love to sit down with Mix Diskerud and some of these other guys and talk to them about it. Id love to understand how much they love their country. I believe they can have love for both countries, but Id love to hear it, and I think so many other people would, too. If this is an ignorant opinion, Ill raise my hand in the end and say, My bad. But Id want to have that conversation.
Is she a Trumpanzee or something?! First Hopeless, now this. Oh well, at least we still have Megan Rapinoe.

(9,350 posts)Something similar could be said of Sidney Leroux Dwyer. Dwyer has dual Canadian and American citizenship. She was born in Canada, played on Canadian youth teams, and lived in Canada until she was about 15 or 16 years old. She moved to the United States in order to have a chance to be on the American national team. How much success would Dwyer have had if she had played for the Canadian national team? I like Dwyer; however, if Abby Wambach is going to call out the players on the men's team who were born overseas then she needs to address the issue of Dwyer.

Just raise your hand now, Abby.

(9,527 posts)Joining the national team should require a real commitment. Two American born gymnasts competed on the national team for Belarus in spite of never even having visited Belarus. Neither had a shot at making the US team for either world's or the Olympics, but they could for Belarus. What does a national team mean if somebody doesn't have to be a member of that nation?
