it was expected to be short-lived.
I guess the Yankees made out on that deal. They got the Cubs top-rated prospect for Chapman in July, plus three others, then get him back five months later.

As a catcher, even if he can't produce at the plate like he has been (which would be next to impossible to do), he'll still be pretty good.
