Hard right christian types have derided "cafeteria catholics" for a really long time.

I went to a catholic university and i can assure you there was no wingnuttery there. Very anti-Nixon, anti-war, pro-civil rights, and a very broad mix of races and ethnicities.

These catholic colleges are not in the mold of Liberty or GCU.

I think that adds to the odds they're not all that liberal.

. . .aren't from that area. Geez, the center is from Poland, right? So, the geography of the school probably has little to do with his overall outlook. He's just a huge kid with a scholarship to a school in the pacific northwest.

I do get the eastern Washington State ain't like Sea/Tac. But, that doesn't necessarily reflect on the school directly. Just geography.

From the team, could be a regional school and get lots of locals. Not sure, but it never had a reputation before the basketball team got good 20 years or so ago. Could be lots of locals.

I think of where i went more as a regional school, since there are only a couple percent that aren't from Illinois somewhere. (When i was there they had a presence from the Caribbean island countries, like the DR, PR and Haiti. Don't remember why.) But, it was always a fairly diverse school where the proportion of black and asian (though i don't think true of latino students) was at or above the percentages in the Chicago area. That used to be a source of pride in the school.

When i was there it was around 3000 students, but at least a third were commuters, (like me), so a pretty local presence.

Would be interesting to have the regional aspect to a national final.

Football was on probation for a while, other sanctions. NCAA continues to dig around after six or seven years. Embarrassing and frustrating for everyone here.

As for politics, while the NC General Assembly is RW GOP, Chapel Hill and The University are quite liberal. Basketball coach Roy Williams is a liberal Democrat. The late coach Dean Smith was very active on social issues, civil rights, opposition to death penalty. You can love or hate the Tar Heels, it is your choice. Just don't base it on misconceptions about our politics.

Go Heels!
