Resurgent Vogelsong, Sandoval lift Giants over Twins

They come to Bruce Bochy every day and wonder why the Giants are where they are, now with the majors' best record at 31-18. Before Saturday night's 2-1 victory against the Twins, Bochy answered with the word "balance."

The lineup is not top-heavy. Brandon Hicks and Brandon Crawford, the seven and eight hitters, together have 14 homers and 42 RBIs.

Neither is the rotation. Whatever troubles Tim Lincecum and Ryan Vogelsong have had in 2014, more times than not they helped the team win. The Giants are 14-6 in their starts after Vogelsong continued his surge Saturday with his second consecutive scoreless performance.

Vogelsong lasted 6 2/3 innings and allowed three hits. He might have had seven shutout innings for the second start in a row, but he pulled Michael Morse off first base with a high lob on Aaron Hicks' comebacker with two outs in the seventh and Bochy removed him.
