Like pronghorn and elk hunts slipping away. But I am fortunate to have friends who invite me on white tail hunts.

Wow! Using an old Savage 99. Not even the Savage Co. makes any rifle chambered for the .300. Good round, but slipping away, too. At least the under-rated .35 REM is still active.

3. You'd like the rifle I took my first deer with.

It was an old Savage 99 as well. Caliber: .250-3000 (also known as the .250 Savage). You really have to be an old-timer to remember that round, it was one of the first small bullet/high velocity calibers to come out. Its casing was necked down by wildcatters to produce a round that is more familiar in these times: the .22-250.

4. I've read about that round -- started the whole trend.

Should have picked up a Model 99 I saw 3 yrs ago in the pawn shop -- it was in .243, and had a cheap scope on it. It was Savage's "economy" model with checkering which rivaled that of my Stevens DBL barrel! But for $190.00 it was a good deal in a common caliber.

5. That .250-3000 had a Weaver K-4 scope on it---of course.

It was back in the days when a Weaver K-4 seemed like the mandatory scope choice in Texas, like there was some sort of state law or something. Anybody toting a rifle with Leupold or Lyman glass was looked upon as an oddball.
